How to teach "COME" My 5 mo. old (had for 3 wk) doesn't come (which he wasn't trained) i got him from a show breeder and was pretty much handled for show up until then. He's great at grooming, bathing, crate training, yad da yad da:p :rolleyes:We think he now knows his name, DUDLEY, at least his perk up but he deosn't come when we call him, he'll stay doing what he's doing. :confused:Well, I'm concerned when were outside (fenced yard) and time to go in, he thinks its a game or is scared. ( i can't figure it out) He hunkers down and backs up quickly, or simply goes in the opposite direction. When i walk towards him and bend down to pick him up, it like he's scared, very timid? He's fine once I'm holding him, just getting him... I put a harness on him this morning, no lead, to let him run around in the house and get use to it, were going to try a lead this weekend, he doesn't like leads so we haven't gone anywhere unless i carry him like LOWES or HOME DEPOT, which he's good at. Any advise on teaching COME, how do you do that???? |
i would suggest using a bribe os some sort maybe a milk bone or maybe even a piece of jerky and when he is out and about show him you have a treat and say "come on lets go inside" and hold the treat out if he comes he gets the treat. if not no treat. you may need to get real close to show him and let him smell you have something good to eat and then he may follow you. sence you have only had him for a few weeks it could be he is still timid around you and still hasnt learned to trust you yet. i know with my two they will be out in the yard and i will say come on lets go back in and they get ready to bolt inside but until i smack my hand on my leg they will just sit there but as soon as i pat my thigh they go right in. i just started to use that signal with that command and it seems to work but i would definatly try some beef jerky or something. if nothing else that would help build some trust with him. |
lol ..... you have to be more interesting than whatever else is around  My two guys are finding out that the world is a VERY INTERESTING place Forget the guy who's calling their names  Make sure that when you do call them and they come that you praise them alot and when they don't come Don't keep calling their name that will just make them think .. Name Come? Who Cares? Scoop him up and take him away from whatever he thinks is so interesting |
come is a tough one- but a very important one because it is the one command that can save his life. We started with my mom at one end of the room and me at the other- we both had treats- just tiny ones and would say Layla COME- she would come running and then lots of treats. We did this for a few minutes. Then for weeks after i would always have treats on me- and randomly i would call layla COME and she would come bounding to me - and she got LOTS of treats. Our trainer said that come should be the only command where EVERY time you say it- she gets treats- because there might be at ime when she is after something dangerous and she HAS to know that what you are going to give her beats out wahtever she is after- so you virtually always need to have treats when you are going to say come- and lots of them. |

That's the biggest tip...reward them each and every time they come. Mine think the command come.... means treats. |
You can also work on the name recognition - sit near him say his name - if he shows the slightest interest - treat him, repeat that half a dozen times a couple of times a day for a week then say his name when you're standing further away - I think you'll find he'll be by your side looking for that treat in a flash. Just repeat that in all sorts of places and situations with lots of treats. If he doesn't respond just ignore him for a while - then try again. Or try moving closer to him again. As to running around or hunkering down outside - that's just all part of the fun mum! You mean I get to run around while you chase me ? Wheeeee!!! |
