Crate training and pee pads- question! I was wondering if it would be okay for me to use a very large crate to crate train my puppy in? I was thinking that I could make half the crate a designated sleeping area for the pup, with a bed and blankets and so on, and the other half of a crate, place a few pee pads down. Especially while she is a puppy and at night I know that she wont be able to hold her pee that long- but I want her to learn that if she's going to go ANYWHERE in the house- its gonna be in her crate, on her pee pads. I was even thinking of putting the bottom of a littler box in the crate with the pads inside. Bottom line is I'm not planning on using any pee pads around the house- i want to train my dog to go to the door and to do her business outside. But for the mean time, while she is a pup, do you think it will be ok if i split her crate up and make half where she can use the pee pads when she cant hold it anymore?? do you think this could work or will it confuse her too much? |
I always used an xpen, or right now with the one I just got, I use a huge pen, and I put her bed in the back, her water in the middle and her pee pad in the front. I myself don't care for the crate training. I think they should be able to go potty when they have too. so, that should be fine! As she gets older, start moving the pee pad closer to the door that you're going to take her out at. I use pee pads for all 4 of mine, but, the new one will go in her cage and use the pad in there instead of using the other 2 pads I have set out |
oh and by the way, she a 9 week old, Yorkie POO if that helps in any way |
I would still do her the same way...can't wait to see pictures |
i wouldnt even bother with the pee pads because its just going to get shreaded by the pup anyways. best thing to do is to just take them out every two hours and stay out there with them and keep repeating "go potty" or something you would prefer to say and as soon as they go reward them and praise them. i have a yorkie-poo and a yorkie and i will tell you from my experiance my yorkie-poo was much quicker to catch on. now that they are older we let them out in the morning, lunch, dinner, and right before bed. i go out with them and say go potty and both of them will go right where they are when i say it. also if they are still sniffing around outside let them finish smelling because they will go more than once my male will go about 8 times if we let him just stay out as long as he wants. my female (the yorkie-poo) will go 3-4 times each time we let them out. now that they know the system they run out do their thing and then come back in. i am to the point where i can just crack the door for them to run out and they just come back in on their own will. so i guess it is time to get a doggy door and let them go out as they please. i hope this helps and keep in mind while they are inside for the two hours before you let them out again you need to keep a close eye on them and if you cant then it is in the kennel they go. PM me if you have any other problems. we tried everything with our yorkie. |

I actually purchased a baby's playpen from walmart when my effie was a pup. It only cost around $40 and had plenty of room for a pad, to be far enough away from her blankets and food. It worked well for about 3 months, (she is 14 months now) then I deceided to start keeping her out a bit. Over the summer she became both pad and outside trained. I still keep a pad for her inside, just in case, which she rarely ever uses. Once you get them outside a few times, I think it just becomes natural for them to want to potty outside. needless to say the pads to help. I use these pads and they are great..cheap too!
