Looking For Something That Makes Sound to Go Out to Potty I'm not sure what you would call one of these devices.. preferably one that is like a doorbell but larger and makes some sort of noise. If you know anywhere I can buy something like this please post! I'm trying to get him to make sound when he has to go outside but he hardly barks so that is becoming quite difficult. Thanks! oht hat's easy- go to a craft store and buy a bell and some yarn and hang it from your door- that's what we do- Layla just pushes it with her nose when she wants to go out- works like a charm! |

The have "doorbells" at any dollar store.....they go around the doorknob and are decorated for christmas. I use those, and have taken off the Christmas decorations for year-round. These work great for my little ones!! |
Bell Solution from "It's Me or the Dog" I saw this on the show Its Me or the Dog. I have bought one and am going to give it a try. Remember those bells at front desks at hotels and such that you tap on to get someone's attention. They are about $5 and are usually available at any office goods store like Staples or Office Max. Keep me posted and I will let you know of my updates. |
Thanks, I am going to try one of those bells for $5 rather than spend $15 on a bell witha paw print haha. I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I feel like I am messing up some where. I take him out at least every hour but he only goes pee 2-3 times a day and poo 0-4. Maybe I am giving him too much at once. I gated off our step to go in the house (maybe 10 ft by 4 ft with a 4x4 rocky area with a small tree for peeing/pooping), but he has yet to go poo there. I know if I take him on a walk he will go poo on the walk but I don't want to have a dog that poos in the house if he doesn't get a walk when he has to go poo... maybe I am being too picky. His previous owner had him completely potty trained and I feel like I ruined him. I have gone back to square 1. He is crated or on leash unless he just peed and pood in which case he gets free roam of the room I am in. So far this is working.. I guess I will keep this up and see what happens in the next few weeks. Vanessa |

Just like the others have said, take some good old yarn or a shoe string or something and get yourself a bell, put them together and hang it from the doorknob. Works absolute wonders! I know everyone's dog is different and will learn at a different pace. I was blessed with Sasha. After 2 days, she caught on to it and has been absolutely wonderful ever since. |
How funny this is here I just came on here to ask if anyone has been able to train their yorkie to ring a bell to signal they have to pee and this was the top thread! Since we moved Paddy still has been going into the bathroom to pee at least once a week. I tried feeding him in the bathroom and spending more time with him in there so he doesn't think its not part of the house. Most of the times I think his accidents happen because hubby and I don't realize how long its been since he last went out and don't watch him and then find a surprise. We are trying to be better about that but with busy lives its bound to happen. So since he's so close to being trained we figure if he could signal to us when he has to go out instead of just going into the bathroom that would be great. I read about the bell trick and decided to try it. However, the bell rang loudly and now I think he is scared of it. What would be the best way to change his perception? Also, I've read on one site that you shouldn't use treats with this training because the reward should be going outside, and then on another website it said you should use treats. I am confused and would appreciate any advice! |

We still use treats- but just for poop - she knows after she has pooped outside- she hightails it back in and she gets a treat. She doens't get much but just enough to remind her that yes- we do that outside :p |
Door Bells I just bought some door bells from A1 pet supply over the internet. I saw it with their other items. I am sure you could make something like that. It hangs on the door and I ring it for them to go out. So far they have not done anything with it. It's festive around this time of year. Oh well, Judy |
The treats are working great. Paddy is no longer scared of the bell. And today was his most consistant day ringing it every time I asked him. He's more hesitant when its hanging on the door so we're working our way up. I think he'll be alerting me soon enough. Plus with the food and his bed being in the bathroom and spending more time with him there he hasn't peed in there in the last 4 days...*cross fingers* |
