fear of people in new puppy *please help* My new puppy Dude is 5 months old and i've had him for 2 months. I've tried very hard to get him used people from the second i brought him home. he had no problems at first and would run up to strangers with no fear, but recently he seems to have developed a fear of anyone other than my boyfriend and I. I would like to solve this problem as soon as possible! he has no issues with other dogs, and he eventually will come to people but he will scurry out of reach if hands come near him. any suggestions? Thanks! |
He is a young puppy who is still learning things about the world. He has learned that there are things to be scared of. I would just continue taking him out, to new environments, to meet new kinds of people... keep doing it until he gets more socialized. Bring treats! :) |
thanks for the advise! we've tried treats with him, but he's not a big treat eater. The only thing he likes is milkbones and he takes forever to eat even a tiny piece of one. When meeting a new person, he'll run up to them, but as soon as they try to pet or catch him, he'll take off in the other direction. The only luck i've had is giving these "scary strangers" one of his squeaky toys, because he'll go to anyone who has one. I'm just not sure if this is temporary fear or not. we take him on lots of walks in public places and our apartment is pretty busy. I just really don't want a fearful dog i can't take places. :animal-pa |
My pup does this too. Just keep trying. I think it is something they eventually grow out of as they get a bit bigger and more confident. Be sure and try to make people as nonthreatening as possible. I have found that having people sit on the floor with the puppy helps, so he doesn't experience vertigo from being jerked up from the floor by total strangers. |
I'd bring treats with me when meeting new people and have the new person give your puppy a treat when they meet him.. |
Are the people approaching him correctly? Have them kneel down, and scratch his chest, rather than patting him on the head. They should also avoid eye contact. I would suggest letting him get used to that before progressing to him being picked up. Also, if he likes the squeaky toy, definitely bring it with you and give it to people who want to befriend him. :) Rather than letting a stranger reach out for him, let the person squeak the toy and wait for your baby to approach. |
I've had the same problem with both my dogs. They are both kind of shy. I tell people they meet to kneel and hold out their hand for the dog to sniff. Both dogs are curious and will go to them and after just a few seconds of sniffing will let the person pet them. |
Aww... Poor little guy You gotta remember ... yorkies are small Everybody wants to come over and pet him and pick him up and say "How cute he is" Thos big hands coming at him from all directions and lifting him up can get to be scary  For now tell everyone who comes to him they need to come into a room where he is ... act like he's not there and take a seat Let HIM go to them and when he does YOU praise him and tell him what a good boy he is and THEN your inlistee can touch him and play with him once he gets the idea that people are not scary and good things happen when new people are around he'll be fine |
