Need leash training advice! Please help! Marty is 10 weeks old and absolutely HATES having his harness and leash on in the house. He's fine with it outside, but inside I have to practically drag him with me when I need to move to another room. Also, I'm very new to having a puppy so I don't even know HOW to leash train. How much length should I give him? And is there anything else I should know? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Marty and Angela |
Why do you have him on a halter and leash in the house? I guess I don't understand...are you trying to leash train him or what? What is the purpose? :confused: |
I was advised when I got Sully that it helps to start leash training in the house, and by doing so, it also helps your male puppy see YOU as the alpha dog....if that makes any sense. I was told that for a little bit each day, put them on the leash and have them follow you around the house, as long as you enter thru doorways before your puppy does, etc. that way your dog sees you as boss! ;) Any other advice? |
I'd forget about the leash inside the house if he is ok on the leash outside. The advice to put him on a leash inside is really meant to get him used to it before moving into leash training outside. As for the advice about who's boss well as a yorkie mom of 25 years I've just come to realize that yorkies will always believe they are the boss of everything. I prefer to use dialogue and hand signals to train my brood. I don't really mind if they go through the door first, they know I'm the boss when I have to be, just a change in the tone of my voice is enough for them to understand that part. As for leash training and how much leash to let them have, just enough so that they walk beside you in line with your feet if you are walking down a sidewalk. Obvioiusly if you are out in a field or park you'd give them a little more to run on so they can explore. I always start my guys off with a short leash and we don't do the extendable leashes until they are full grown. I need to be able to scoop them up quickly as puppies just in case they decide to eat something they come across. |
I think if your pup is doing well with the leash outside I guess I wouldn't bother with it inside,unless you have an specific purpose. Gucci wouldnt walk at the beginning with the leash and i was advise to get her use to it to train leash her inside, now she does great. |
