Night Time barking/peeing problem! Our puppy is 5 months old. Pretty much got the day time outside potty thing down. At night he sleeps in his crate in the laundry room (I don't shut the crate). he goes to bed at 9:00 and is fine until the a.m. We get up at 4:30 a.m. to get ready for work but he wakes up at 2:30 or 3 every morning, yapping and barking. I'm sure he's doing this to go outside. We don't get up so subsequently he pees in the laundry room. What can we do? I don't want to get up at 2:30 am. every day and I know he wouldn't go back to sleep after going outside to pee. I tried the piddle pads but he rips them up. My husband wants me to get rid of the little guy because of this. Can you help me? |
It sounds like he is doing what you've trained him to do; go potty outside. So, during the night, he barks so to let you know that he needs to go potty. I think it's creating confusions for him if he's expected to go outside AND to also go on the piddle pads. So, i think until he gets older to where he can hold it thru the night, you may just have to give up some sleeps and let him out. I know, no help here! = ) My 4 mo. old still needs to go 2x a night. When i first got her home at 9 weeks, she woke me up every 2 hours to take her out of her crate to go potty on papers. Now at 4 mos. she's waking up 2x/nite now and I am very very thankful for the extra sleep. I know that it's work having a puppy so i expected the sleepless nights. |
Need More Replies please! I need more suggestions. Anyone? |
You might want to review some other threads in this section, because they have a lot of good potty training advice. Of the top of my head, there are a couple things you can do to keep him from ripping up the pee pads. First, you can spray them with bitter apple scent. Second, someone here said they got a pee pad holder that locks the pee pad in place. I haven't seen one of these myself, but apparently you need to make sure to get a sturdy one. Bottom line, he's a baby, and he probably can't hold it all the way through the night yet. This will likely change in the next few months, or even the next few weeks. I suspect that GeorgiesMama is right -- you've successfully trained him to go outside (congratulations!), and he is trying to do what he's been taught. I see you live in California. If you do end up deciding to re-home your dog, please PM me. I am looking into getting a second yorkie, and I would really like to get a "rescue". :) |
