Hopeless Cause? Ok, I'm kind of scared. Dh has been off for the holiday (thank goodness he went back today, lol) and every night he has been "playing" with Maximus. I mean, hours at a time. Which is nice. I hate to admit that I don't do that. I mean, I play with him a bit, but when he starts nipping and biting, I'm done. Well, a Christmas or two ago my dd got a stuffed yorkie (The Children's Place). It was one of those, spend so much $$ get a free Yorkie deals. Well, that is Maximus' yorkie now. You put it done in front of him, it is WAR! So, dh goes in his play area and plays with him, gets him wound up, to where he is in fight mode, biting, growling. Getting him to jump up his legs for the stuffed yorkie. He is NOT interested in being loved on at this time. His heart is just a beating. lol His goal is to put that yorkie in submission. My question, is dh messing up my chances to have a sweet pup? Dh cuts up with me and says, "look at him, he's psychotic". I told him that he was making him that way. Even now, when I go in the bathroom to do anything, when I reach for him, he holds his head back and shows teeth. I want a sweet puppy. Do I need to forbid the dh to play so rough with him? |
My answer would be Yes, he's setting your Yorkie up for aggression. If you want a calm and loving puppy you need to be calm and loving. Even playing tug of war can cause aggression down the road. Tell you hubby it's great to play with your pup but he must be more calm in his playing or you won't like what your pups grows up to be. It won't be his fault either. I hope hubby listen's and rethinks his way of playing in the future. Good luck, This is a very impressionable age and these little ones learn fast. |
I would stop the rough play. teach him to fetch. You said when you reach for him he shows his teeth. Is his nub going? Or is he growling? If he is showing his teeth but his tail is going he is smiling! My Yorkie smiles all the time. All I have to do is say "what you doing". and he smiles! :D If he looks like he is going to tear your hand off, not smiling. |
I think featch is a great idea, also work with sit and stay. Maybe when he is sleeping, pick him up and cuddle that way he learns snuggle time is fun too! |
