Fetch? Hi Guys. I've been working with my dog Wesley for over a month now on different tricks. So far he can do quite a bit. I can't for the life of me seem to get him to fetch. He has no problem "touching". I can throw something and says touch and he will go to it, touch his nose on it, then turn to me for his treat. It's hard to get him to put anything in his mouth (besides food) when he knows there is a treat in my hand. How can I convert that into fetch? Strangely enough all the books I have don't mention fetching in the tricks sections (I guess they think most dogs do this instictively?) Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks -Curtis |
Well, I'm probably no help. I believe that fetching would be instinctive, only because I've never really had to teach that to any of my pets before. I would just call and they would come running because they knew it was a game. Deegan was especially good - I just threw the ball, he would run and get it and bring it back like he expected me to throw it again. Sorry - I'm sure he will get it in time. |
My 8 year old, Jasmine, was like your dog. She was at least two, maybe three before she finally figured out that when I threw her toy, the right thing to do was bring it back. It was funny, but frustrating - she expected me to go get it and would look at me oddly, even cocking her head to the side, when I didn't. She really loves to wrestle with her stuffed toy (only one, she has ignored all others), so I just kept playing tug of war and keep-away with her and that toy, then would throw the toy and say, "Get your toy, Jasmine, get your toy" in a really excited voice. If she didn't get it, we stopped playing until the next time I felt like trying. Eventually, she brought it back on her own. Now *laugh*, I can tell her at any time "Get your toy, Jasmine!" and she will go find it and bring it to me. Good luck and have patience, Curtis! |
Logan will go get the toy, but they when I say bring it here he gets excited and drops the toy and comes a runnin. It would be cute if it wasn't frustrating. |
My Rowdy (Austrailian Cattle Dog) is now 11 years old, and still will not chase a ball. As a matter of fact, I never saw him play with anything until he was around the Yorkie puppies, and he will play with them, getting on the floor and making himself as low as he can to be at their level. But he also gets bored with that pretty quick. I used to buy him toys, which he ignored. I threw the ball and he looked at me like he thought I was crazy. If I wanted the ball, I could just go get it myself. He was nearly 3 when I got him, so I have figured that he never had a chance to play when he was a pup. |
Toby LOVES fetch.... it is one of his favorite games..... i didnt have to teach him though, he naturally just went and got the ball (the hard part was getting the little sh!t to give it back :rolleyes: ) so..... i think "give" was the hardest command he had to learn (he never willingly wants to 'give' anything that is 'his".... if mommy and daddy want it so bad they can chase or buy their own....... <- that is probably what he thinks.....lol) |
When I was teaching Tuffy how to fetch I used a mint scented/flavored mini tennis ball and it worked like a charm to get him to grab it. The hardest part was getting him to bring it back and drop it. I taught him the command to drop it seperately so he could figure that out before putting it together with bringing it back. I used cheerios to get entice him to bring me back the ball and then drop it in my hand. He learned it really fast using the mint tennis balls. |
I'd say forget the treats. I've never had a dog (of any size) that didn't play fetch and none of them got treats. They were just more than happy to play. The only problem I have is that sometimes they don't want to give up their toy when they bring it back to you! :D |
Samson loves to play fetch but one thing I will say is he is a lot better at it in the house rather than outside. Inside I just started throwing it and saying "go get it" even though he usually would do that on his own, then I started saying "bring it to momma" and it didn't take long before he knew that to keep playing he had to bring it back to me. Try to use a really excited voice when you're telling him to get it and bring it back. He should catch on. I think outside there are too many other distractions so sometimes he'll run to it when I throw it but won't bring it back. |
Ramsey loves fetch; his only problem is letting the toy go. I can throw it, tell him to go get it and when he runs back to me and I try to grab the toy he runs away. Then I have to play tug of war to get the toy back so I can throw it again! |

We didn't have to teach Josie to fetch either. :aimeeyork We use to have a min pin and she would not fetch. :confused: No matter how much we wanted her to. :( So we just assumed we weren't good teacher's and never even tried with Josie. :aimeeyork AND then one day there it was just by pure coincidence. :D It will happen, don't worry. ;) |
