Eating Stones! Will Buddy grow out of it or not, he has a very very bad habit of picking stones up, chewing on them and mostly swallowing them (I am sure), thats if I have not picked him up and taken the stone out of his mouth. Its not as tho you can go for a walk without finding stones, our garden is full of them. Oh he is 16 weeks old, adorable and cute. |
I am going to keep an eye on this thread - my Lily does the exact same thing!! I'm petrified she's going to choke - and you know, we just have to have our "rock" landscaping to keep everything interesting! YIKES:eek: |
Chase doesn't eat stones, but he'll try to eat leaves, twigs, paper, and food. He knows the leave it command, but it has a 50% success rate on walks. I'm curious if anyone has suggestions to stop this? My friend said it is just a puppy phase and he'll grow out of it. Her puppy would eat everything in sight outside, plastic, wood, etc. But, he doesn't do it anymore. I feel so worried after he ingests stuff off the street. . |
Yes I have 2 one is 3yrs and the other is 2yrs. They both grew out of eating stones, toilet paper, anything. |

I am not saying it is but it could possibly be an OCD and a chat with a vet with behaviour or a PHD behaviousist may help. That be for stone eating. JL |
Bobby eats rocks, leaves, toilet paper. You name it he eats it. I dont think he swallows the rocks though, just chews on them. he is 1 1/2 years. |
Rock eating in Border Collies is an OCD that is why I said that it needs to be looked at. Some of it can just be exploring but it never hurts to go ask a person with a hold bunch of neat letters behind their names what they think it could be. It could be just a thing that got lots of attention and now is a formed behavaiour. You could try ingoring it and redirecting the dog off what ever it shewing with little fuss and see if that helps. It could also be the teething thing:animal36 |
A lot of times when they lick stones and things like that is because something is missing from their diet...What are your babies eating? Miko did this when he was deficient in certain minerals/vitamins when he was a pup... |
Most of the time when I take Sasha for walks or even when I take her outside, my eyes are always one step ahead of her so I know what's coming ahead on the sidewalk that she'll try to go for. She tries to mostly only pick up dried up worms. Shes never gone for stones (knock on wood) I know stones are small, but if possible, try and not let your baby eat those. They can sometimes get lodged in their intestines and that requires major surgery to unblock that. I'm sure he'll grow out of it, but you might want to consider getting rid of the stones in your yard? or at least keeping him away from them for the time being. |
