Transitioning from peepee pads to outside
 
Do any of you have any suggestions on the easiest way to transition a puppy of 5 mos from pads to outdoors? My puppy uses the pads 90% of the time and when we go outside, she occasionally will go but usually she wants to play outside and come in to potty. Any help would be great! Thanks.

I move the pee pad toward the door until it's right in front of the door and when the puppy gets on the pad and starts to spin I let her outside. If the problem is getting her to go once she's out there you might try putting a pee pad outside for a few times. I sometimes use a play pen outside to reinforce the "no play until potty" rule. Remember to praise immediately or even while the potty is happening. Once she figures out how easy it is to make you happy she'll be ready to go.

Thank you for your help. I will try your suggestions. Part of my problem is that the breeder had the pads in the xpen at her home, so Lily went right to the pads here at the house, because I put up an xpen as well. Since she was using them, I took the xpen down because it took up so much room, but when I did, she didn't use the pads! So I put it back up. If I move the pad to the door, I'll try again to remove the pen. My problem is there is very little space and I would love to get rid of the pen. She has a crate she can go to when I am away. I'll keep working on it. Thanks again.:aimeeyork

Tight Quarters can be a problem but can also be a help with fewer places to get out of sight to potty. The play pen is a great idea and I use it a lot...unless I am keeping the puppy for myself. Then I use the crate exclusively and the crate stays right by the door so she can go straight outside each time I take her out. The play pen used during the day for longer periods works very well, I think crating helps the puppy understand that she must please me to earn free time in the house. It's my job to communicate to her what pleases me, and nothing's better than a successful outside potty!

The fact that you are paying attention and actively trying to train puts you half way there. I don't call a puppy house trained until at least a year. You'll have a well trained companion before you know it. Good Luck!!!
