My carpet is RUINED!! Hello everyone!! I hope you can help me out with some suggestions! I have a 4 YEAR OLD yorkie that cannot seem to get potty training. Yes, 4 YEARS old, not 4 months!! I lived in an apartment her whole life and she had an x-pen and potty pads, so it was never really an issue. My fiance and I bought our first house a few months ago and she has been peeing on our carpet!! It's practically ruined! I've tried giving her really nummy liver treats and lots of praise when she goes outside. She does go, but an hour, sometimes even a half hour later she'll go inside! I swear she just fake pees outside to get the treat!! I've been crating her when she isn't 100% supervised and giving her about 5 or 10 minutes of play time after she goes out and successfully pees. But I still find little pee spots. I've steam cleaned the carpets at least twice in the last month, and it still stinks like pee in my house! Any suggestions would be great. Thanks so much!! |
My 4 month old is doing the same thing i believe even though he goes a lot outside, What color is your carpet? I have found that if you soak up the pee right away and then clean the patch like with an carpet oxy cleaner it will remove the stain and the smell, once a week after i vacuum i also febreeze the entire carpet. you just have to make sure to watch them every second, i could not believe the little surprises mine would leave me when hes out of my sight for only 5 seconds. It also helps that my carpet is a dark beige, i picked out that color on purpose to hide stains that may not come out. |
Is it possible that you did not make it clear to her just where she is supposed to potty. I'd suggest putting down pee pads since she is used to using them. Then go back to basics and watch herr when she is roaming free. you have to correct instantly or it does no good. It is possible that your carpet was peed on by another dog. If you use a good pet odor remover it should no longer smell to humans, but dogs will be able to smell it. When you finally have her trained, have it professionally cleaned. |
I would advise getting professional help Ck into getting some professional training help. It has to be cheaper than continually getting new carpet every few years. Good Luck.....we use potty pads and give a distinct order for her to "go potty" and then the treat.....but, with yours being 4 yrs old.....you may need help. |
use white vinegar in the water when you clean your carpet, it removes the smell:) |
Thanks for the suggestions everyone. She knows very well to go outside! I continually tell her to "go potty" while outside, and she sniffs around until she finds a good spot. I have 2 other dogs that I've never had problems with. They even ask to go out, Reese doesn't ask. And the potty pads in my apartment were because I couldn't always make it home to take her out during the day. I've always taken them outside when I could. So, she either saves some for inside, fakes peeing outside completely, or her bladder is too small to hold her pee. She's 3 pounds, but I'd still expect her to be able to hold it for at least a few hours. She holds it all night! We're starting from step one, as if she were a new puppy. She's in her crate if she's not in our laps. She only leaves her crate to go outside and eat. If she pees outside, then she can have a liver treat and come in and have 5 - 15 minutes of free, supervised play time. If she doesn't pee, then it's right back in the crate and try again in an hour. I'm lucky since I've gone back to college and can be home most of the day to do all this!! We have beige carpet as well, and it's so hard to see anything!! By the time I realize a room has become "dog toilet" it's because I can smell it and it's too late!! We bought a little hand held black light to go over the carpet.... the HORROR!!!!! |
carpet Man am I feeling your pain!!!!!! My Ryle is 8 mths. and still pee"s when and whereever he feels like it. Even though we are home all day with him and taking him out constantly and saying go potty, good boy etc. It really is so frustrating. |

LOL! Try 4 YEARS!!! I just can't wrap my head around the fact that my baby is turning 4 next week and still can't figure out to potty outside!!! LOL!! |
I have a four year old male yorkie as well. He has never been 100% trained either. I have had other breeds of dogs who have learned the potty thing quickly and completely. I think it is a yorkie thing to be tough to train if at all. I am going back to crating mine until he can be supervised. I found that using the pads invited him to use the carpet as well. Let me know what works for you cause I will try it also!!!! |
I think I will give up now and just tile the whole house.I haven't put in a doggie door because I don't want Jamie roaming the garden at night as there are some horrible evil people who go around poisoning pets.I block off the lounge and Study and put newspaper in the bathroom at night for accidents. |
white vinegar really works? |

I think using the potty pads are what made my dog like this. I never used them with my older dog, and he NEVER just pees in the house. If he does, it's because he REALLY needed to go or he's sick. Reese will be walking in from outside and stop to pee on the carpet on her way in! I've been crating her when I can't watch her and that seems to be helping. I also give her liver treats when she pottys outside and make a huge deal about it. She'll start running, jumping and wagging her tail as if to say, "Look I pottied outside!!! I'm a big girl!!!" LOL! |
Take her out more often & watch her when shes is inside, If she can't be watched she should be xpened or crated. |
My 8 month old Sadie is doing the same thing. I've had her since she was 3 months old and she has always been trained to go outside. In September I rescued another dog and Sadie started to pee all over my carpet. I usually don't see it happen, but I smell it and it's driving me nuts. I walk around the apartment with Nature's Miracle. I spoke to a trainer who recommended an xpen to confine Sadie to one area. She does fine in there and plays happily, but now she is peeing on the carpet inside the xpen. I don't have enough room to place the pen in my kitchen which has the only tiled floor in the apartment. I am so frusrated and sick of cleaning up pee. Now my male dog, who was completely housetrained, has started marking where Sadie pees. I can't watch her every second and feel pretty hopeless right now. Has anyone thought of checking if the dog has a bladder infection? Any other suggestions? |
To get rid of the pee smell, this works I swear: 1 cup peroxide 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 pump hand soap mix well in a glass or plastic bowl with a plastic spoon. Saturate area, let dry. Smell & stain is gone. I made a huge batch and used it in my steam cleaner & I still can't believe how well it worked and it is cheap to make. |
