My Yorkie had separation anxiety ever since he was a pup coz I stay home all the time when he was a pup. He wouldn't even take the treat in the kong toy no matter how good it is or pee on his pee pad while we were gone. We eventually found a solution in our new home. We put him wherever we want him to be when we are out (no talking to him, no fussing him, no eye contact, be calm and keep breathing) and then I will practice with him by being out of his sight for a few seconds and gradually build it up to 15 minutes with me going in and out of the house. We also made him a nice storage chest with a cushion on top of it with some stairs so that he can lounge and hang out there to look out the window when we do go out. It makes him feel better when he can see us when we are outside. I don't think it will be the same reaction with every dog when it comes to solving the separation anxiety issue. I hope you will find yours soon. |

Our 4 year old rescue Yorkie had terrible separation anxiety. She would howl and pee if I left her for 5 min (the vet said she panicked). We have had her since the end of June and started out with me just leaving her long enough to check the mail. I'd hear her howling on the way up the drive. Now I can leave her up to 3 hours, I also give her a ziggie in her Kong toy before I go. She only gets that when I am going to leave her. It's her treat for staying alone (with the cat). If I/we are going to be gone longer than three hours our daughter comes over to stay with her awhile. Soon we will leave her 3 and a half hours and see how she does. It was baby steps, just a few min at a time. Now we try 30 min at a time and she's coming along fine. Good luck! |

Your ideas are very good. Would like to have another yorkie but not now, maybe in the near future to keep him company. I am trying the radio and Tv on and seem to help. Thanks your advice. |

I try to take him with me most of the time to prevent getting him very anxious. I'm starting leaving him for short periods of time. It's working little by little. |
