Problems Pad Training I got a 7 month old female yorkie a month and a half ago. She was caged at the store and she hadn't known what outside was. I started training her outside but when she was sitting on the stoop shaking at 6am because it was cold and I already had a sweater on her I thought maybe I should pad train her. It has been 2 weeks almost and she is only going on them 50% of the time. I don't know if she can't tell the difference between the carpet and the pads or what the deal is. Is there anyone that has had this problem or any suggestions? I have searched online and I can't seem to find any answers and everything makes it seem so easy and have no solutions for problems. I bought the dog pan and litter stuff and all she will do is eat it. I am at a loss this is my first dog and I am going crazy trying to get her pad trained. Someone please help!!!! |
:):)I know what you mean. Tyke is 4 1/2 monthes old. He was going on the pads good, and now he goes beside them. I'm thinking about getting some of the washable ones. Because he does like going on my rugs when we're not paying attention to him. I think the washable pads are more like the rugs. The best advice I can give is patience. This is a trial and error thing and all dogs are different. I don't know why he all of sudden decided to quit using the pads. Now he is in his own room when he does this, where his bed, food, and toys are along with the pads. The other thing you can try is putting some of her pee on the pad, so she'll smell and think she's went there before. I don't have all the answers either. I just try things I read on here to see if it works. but right now i'm struggling trying to figure out why he doesn't go on the pads in the last 4 days when he was doing so good. hmmmm:) |
Reply I have tried using her pee the housebreaking aid that smells like pee and she doesn't have a pattern when she goes because I will watch her. A lot of the time when she goes its like a snap decision. She doesn't sniff around for a spot ususally. For example this morning she went to get a drink of water and then as soon as she lifted her head she squatted and peed where she was standing. It just seems like all the regular things that dogs are supposed to do she doesn't do. She will pee in her cage and then lay in it I think she does it just to make me mad. All the books say that she will start to pee in one place and it has been 2 weeks and there isn't any consistancy for it. I am just getting really frustrated and my husband thinks that I should start taking her outside again. I really don't want to do that because when it starts to get cold it will take 10 minutes just to get dressed to go outside and still have her freeze and I feel terrible about that. It would be so much easier if there were signs to look for a some consistancy and I am running out of options to use and patience. |
well I've had Tyke 1 1/2 monthes and his first 2 weeks were not predictable at all. I'm just now reading the signs he has to go out. Which I take him outside. The pads are when he's in the room...when we're gone from the house. But I've never had good luck with him using them when we're home. Now he did use them for awhile and Like i said he's started not using them for some reason. It does take awhile to start reading them and figuring out there schedule. Because you see I've been doing this for over a month now. Also your dog is older and she was in a cage. IT's like your retraining them all over. Tyke was in a cage and it was tough because he was used to going in the crate and he's mastered that in the last week. He can go from 10 at night to 7 in the morning in the crate without any mess. Just give it time....lots of praise and treats when she goes in the right place. It doesn't help to get fustrated because they feel it and i just go clean up his mess and don't say anything to him. It's a stuggle just try to hang in there. :) |
Thanks for the advice I think I will hang in for one more week and see if she gets the hang of it. She is still going outside when I take her out she just gets so cold that I worry so we will see how it goes. |
Hello, I have an almost 1 yr old boy and I trained him to use a pan with just a pee pad in it. I tried the litter and he just tried to eat it also, so I took the litter away and just put the pad inside the litter pan, that way he has a defined space for potty. Also, I cut the pads in half so I get two out of one. I did use the housebreaking aid spray in the beginning, I would spray it on the pad. Now he knows that is his potty and I take it to peoples homes and put in a corner and he goes right to it. Try the pan and just the wee wee pad in it. Hope that helps!! |
