Bark Collars??

My puppy is 10 weeks and I am noticing that he is developing a barking problem. I have tried the pennies in the can and etc, but he actually barks at me doing that:confused: Will he eventually grow out of it?

Just to be aware. I live on campus and we aren't exactly allowed to have pets, but I figure that life is about enjoying little moments of happiness and my pets make me happy. We have not gotten caught yet because my ex-roommate's cats were quiet and my puppy Leo (a shih tzu) doesn't bark at all. He doesn't even whimper so it has never been an issue.

Dr. Foster's catalogue shows one for small dogs that operates with vibrations. We have tried it on our larger teapot Yorkie and Havanese dogs and it has helped quieted them down. Worth a try.

We have been using one on our yorkie (the vibration collar) and it has been working well.

isn't that kind of evil though? have you tried on the collar to see how much it hurts?

i have a friend who was going to put that on his dog, but after he put it on his neck and tried it on himself, he decided that he is not going to torture the dog with it because it's too mean.

hopefully the ones you guys are using is different?

Chino about drove me insane this weekend when we came home and my mother-in-law was here. Everytime she talked he would go crazy.......after she left he stopped acting crazy. That was my bark collar :)

I would never put a bark collar on him, it does seem little mean if not cruel. Maybe you can spray him with water when he carries on in that manner. Heck me doing something like that with Chino seems little mean, so I haven't tried that either. I did put him in his crate as punishment after about 3 hours of crazy barking, took him back out and started back up when she spoke.

There is one that lets off a high ptiched sound that is avaliable at pet smart and it tends to work on small dogs.
There is a table one as well.

There is a differnce between the ones that send out a shock and those that make a sound or spray.

Shock ones are not ok but and sound and spray ones are in a pinch to keep a dog in its home while you work on teaching it to feel safe and not have sepration anxiety is a ok stop gap but should not be the end all be all and trainig should happen with it.

This did not work for me. I bought several different varieties.
A ten week old puppy does not even understand the concept of no
barking. Most 10 wk old pups don't even bark yet.
You need to be patient with your pup. Perhaps your feeling extra
stressed because like you mentioned you not suppose to have a pet.
It's not the dog's fault he is in a situation where he needs to be punished
for something that is coming natural to him. Using a collar of any kind,
especially unsuperived during the day and night can be very dangerous.
Not only could he get caught on something but there have been cases
where the dog actually choked itself trying to get the collar off and got
his foot stuck between the collar and neck, choking.
To train a dog to do anything takes time and patience. You can't shake
a can once or twice and say it dosent work. The dog first is too young
and second he has to understand that when the can is shook he has to stop
barking. This only comes when it is continuous training on a daily basis.
Good luck,

Good luck,

Actually I said "Tends" not that is postivley would work not all things work on all dogs. Why working postive which does work on many is better.

As for the collar some of us never take them off our dogs ever and that why break away collars were invented.

That the can did not work does not surprise me as the timing would be wrong and if the dog saw it being shook by the person it tends not to work.
Can at that age is a sound for him to learn to ignore and socialize too.

Punsihment is never the way to go but in a pinch like I said to keep a roof over eveyones head and a dog in a home it is a start point for more training.
At least she not suggested debarking as an option... cause it is your know.

10 weeks is tiny and should not have a loud enough voice to bother anyone really. I missed the weeks.. teach shh and bark and see if you can get it under control. maybe rethink having him where it is not to be is a good idea as you may just need to move.

Our two had a bad barking problem for about 6 months. We did the pennies in the can and it helped but certainly didn't relieve the problem. Then we moved to a quiet neighborhood and haven't had a single problem since. They only bark at the doorbell or thunder. It's such a blessing. My two grew out of it, I hope yours does too. Good luck!

P.S. Be careful, I got caught with a mouse in the dorms in college and almost got kicked out!

yorkiepuppie 10-21-2008 01:26 PM

one of the things that i was taught to stop dogs barking is to train them to bark on command. when ever the dog is barking, you can use a command word, like "speak" or whatever, and praise him for barking, and use another word like "quiet" or anything you like, when the dog stops barking, and give him a treat for it.

this way, the dog understands exactly what you want her to do.

you might want to train him somewhere else besides your dorm room. it's a bit unrealistic to think that you won't get caught keeping a dog in the dorm. i mean, if you don't want to get caught, you need to have animals that are not noisy. like maybe bunnies...i do wish you good luck though, but you might also want to start thinking about plan B - what will you do if they find out and told you you could not keep the dog or if they kick you out? (just to be safe, start thinking of something in case that does happen)

Humans are more sensitive to pain than dogs.
-I don't think you can pick humans up by their necks either.

NO humans are not more sensitive to pain.... dog hide it better thus the increased use of pain meds in dogs after an injury as they do not heal as well without it.

Dogs in the wild if they show pain are dead in minutes so they are very guarded in what they show.

There is no reason to use any method on a dog that causes pain of any kind ever !!!!

thank you for the info about the pain med help with healing. i didn't know that.
yes, i think its bad to use pain as a teaching method.
and just because they have one part of their body designed so that their moms can carry them by their necks doesnt mean they aren't sensitive to pain.
little baby milu wines all the time if something hurt her. so i feel that they are sensitive to pain.
i love my milu so much, i cannot imagine putting a bark collar on her!
the key is to work with them on the "speak" and "quiet" commands - which i should be working with milu on as well, i haven't done it yet because she is not a barker.

You got it is designed for Mom to carry them not humans and even moms can scruff a pup wrong and hurt it. Not something to be done lightly and in many cases the mother dogs has more then the scruff in its mouth but all or part of the back.. its a whole body carry not just scruff.

Scruffing is for the kill.. you all pretty much seen a dog shake something to snap it, That snap or scruff shake is to kill.

Now shh and quiet works on dogs that are not reactive and more sometimes must happen on dogs that explode so like everything it depends on just what the dog is made of.
