Housebreaking Woes My little Chase is 17 weeks old and we've been training him to use the pee pads. He uses the pee pad 80% of the time with the occasional accidents. Now that he's fully vaccinated, I want to train him to go outside. The problem is that he's holding his pee/poo until we get back inside. I take him outside as soon as he wakes up in the morning, place pee pads outside, give praise/treats when successful pee/poo occurs, etc. It's been extremely difficult to get him to understand doing his "business" outside. Any tips? Also, once he is accustomed to going outside, should I not keep any pee pads inside? Thanks! P.S. He graduated from his puppy kindergarten class today and was voted "Top Dog for Tricks":D. |
You really need to stay out there as long as it takes the first few times to get him to go out there so he knows that is where you really want him to go. Another good thing would be to place a piece of his poo outside where you want him to go so he knows that is where it goes. Once you really get full on training him if you want to remove the pad from the house then you need to keep an eagle eye on him and watch for the bathroom signs and just take him out regularly. It will be quite some time before your accident free and also before you can trust him totally. I think training goes faster if your a stay at home owner and can stay totally on top of it. Lots of praise and consistence is all I can tell you. Zoey is a year and almost a month and will have an accident here and there still. Toby is coming along but has to be watched too. Yorkies and toy dogs in general I think are hardheaded. Good luck and may the force be with you. :D |
Yes, I've heard how hardheaded Yorkies can be:). They're lucky that they look so cute and irresistible. It's really remarkable how long he can hold it while outside, but I'll try to stay outside consistently until something happens! That's a good idea to leave a little piece of his poop. Hopefully, it'll do the trick. Good luck with Zoey and Toby! |
I agree that it takes a bit of time to get a furbaby to realise what you want him to do. I know that it's not so nice for us in the winter, that's when we trained Max, but it's worth it. I now trust Max 100%. He goes after he's sniffed and positioned himself as he deems fit, only now it's it's on command. I've consistently trained him to "be quick" good boy", I repeat these words all the time. It usually takes less than five minutes. |
An update: I've had to walk him for an hour and a half, but he's consistently gone to the "bathroom" outside for the last two days! He also pees on the pee pads as soon as he gets home:rolleyes:. It's a starting point. |
