Barking at other dogs Does anyone else' dog bark at other dogs they don't know? When i am walking my dogs Sophie barks up a storm at other dogs, mostly big dogs. I think she sees them as a threat and then feels the need to talk smack but she is all talk and no action. As soon as one of them approach her she hides behind me or cries out loud even if they aren't even touching her. She has never gotten attacked as far as i know. I can't seem to walk her w/o her barking and super loud i have to say. It's that squeeky loud high pitched bark and make ppl look at me. I get soooo embarrassed. I don't know how to stop it. I watch Cesar milan and have tried what he does but it doesn't work. Whenever i try to shut her up she barks even louder. She is the only one that does this..What is a girl to do? |
I have been watching a show on Animal Planet. It's called "It's Me or the Dog!". Today there were two yorkies that had been kidnapped. The window was busted out of the ladies car and the dogs were taken while she was shopping in the Mall. When the dogs got back home, they were terrified of everything and everyone. They had to close the blinds, because the dogs would freak out over any passerby's. The lady who hosts this show is amazing. She took these traumatized babies and began the process of trusting strangers again! IT WAS TOTALLY amazing. Try to pick up that show. Barking was the huge issue on this particilar clip. This all happened in London. Good Luck - |
Oh, yes, Daisy does this too!!! I absolutely hate it and do not know what to do to make her stop. I have tried almost everything. We have a golden retriever that is a little younger than Daisy and Daisy will bark at her constantly if she sees her. And.....it is not a playful bark, it is more of a mean bark. If anyone has any advice on how to stop this, please let me know!!!!! |
I think my york does this to protect me. Although, he never backs down no matter now large the other dog is. Only certain dogs set him off. I guess I could use the dog whisper. lol.. |
I was watching It's me or the dog last night and she was working with a boxer that had aggression and would snap, snarl and bark at other dogs. At one point she made this high pitched squeaky sound to get the dog's attention and when he looked at her, she gave him a treat. He would bark at other dogs when he was out on the balcony too and she was training the owners to practice "watch me" and give a treat to redirect the focus and attention to them instead of dogs going by. She also had them use a whistle, but I think a clicker would work too. Good luck!! |
Deegan does this too & it's rather embarassing!!! But it depends - sometimes he does & sometimes he doesn't. It seems like the only times he does is when we see a well mannered dog, (big or small) that doesn't really care that he's there, that's when he flips out barking and yanking on the leash. But if the other dog is acting the same way Deegan is calm... I seriously don't get it - it's like he's offended if another dog doesn't acknowledge that he's there. The worst part is I don't know how to correct it. I try walking the other way, but he's still turns around and gets me all tangled up watching the other dog.... or I try just sitting there trying to correct him by saying no and give a tug on the leash... I've even tried picking him up and putting him on his back (for submission) & carrying him like a baby, but he still squirms and wriggles around barking his head off. I need Ceasar Milan!!!! |
It's good to know that Daisy is not the only yorkie who acts this way....I was beginning to think I was the one that caused her to be this way. |
Now if we can all just get a solution..lol I too have tried the method of just keep walking and pull her along side but she doesnt quit. There are some occasions she doesnt do it but is tempted to but for the most part she does it. Oh and the funny thing is when we go to meetups where there are other small dogs she wont bark at all. She is well behaved. It's just when we are walking outside and she is on a leash and sees bigger dogs, or other dogs barking but then again backs away when they approach her:rolleyes: |

Widget is afraid of water so I've learned to have a spray bottle handy, most of the time I just have to show it to her to shut her up, and when walking I carry a childs water pistol, most of the time it dosen't have any water in it....but seems to work for her....:D |
Rocky and Bella do the same thing, occasionally they'll have good days where they'll be nice to other dogs they see on their walk, but usually they act like they need to kill all the other dogs in the neighborhood! Also, it's only when their with me, when my fiance walks them their perfect little angels:rolleyes: I tried the spray bottle, but with Rocky he just gets more PO'd and starts barking at the spray bottle. Now I'm working on just getting them to focus on me when they see another dog, and if they do they get a treat, but when they see other dogs usually they tune everything else out. |

I am not surprised Cesers stuff does not work it tends not to in outside the TV screen real world application. I also as you are in new york go to clicker solutions and see if you can find a trainer willing to come once and show you how to set up a desensitization program similar to what the lady does in it me or the dog. Remember it a dog cooking show and it takes longer to rehab in real life then it does on a dog cooking show. JL |
I love the show "It's me or the dog", and what I have seen when she has a dog that barks at oncoming dogs or people is that she redirects them as soon as the dog begins to bark. That way the dog doesn't get the chance to become panicked and associates barking at others as a bad thing that will in no way get them what they want. So next time you take your yorkie for a walk you might want to try this. As soon as he/she begins to bark just turn around and go the other way. When they have stopped turn around and continue walking. If it happens again repeat the same thing, and keep repeating until they no longer bark. I have really seen this work on the show. Hopefully it will work for you!:) |
same problem my yorkie does exactly the same...he barks at dogs and people when i take him out for a walk, the funny thing is though if i take him somewhere busy he is really good and doesn't bark at people and only at dogs that bark at him but if i take him to a quite place he barks at everything, and its so embarrasing especially at 8 am when people are still in bed:eek: i'm suprised i haven't had complaints actually, he barks as soon as we get out the gate even if nothings there! I've tried squirting him with water and picking him up alsorts, what i have started doing is if he barks i make him sit and we don't move until he stops as soon as he stops i praise him he also has a halti on which goes round their mouth so u have more control so when i make him sit i can correct him by gently pulling the lead so the halti turns him to face me and i make him look away from the dog or person until they go. also if he barks at a person i make him sit near the person until he stops barking and as soon as he looks away i start to walk again...its been working and he has improved but i think its something that will take a while to get him out of. just thought i would give u some ideas coz i know how embarrasing it is! hope it helps.:) |
Smokey barks and barks and barks when he sees another dog. His thing is though, he wants to play. I eventually got the gentle leader for him and it has improved significantly. Within 2 days he stopped barking with it on. The only way he gets excited is if another dog is acting up or another dog barks at him |
