How to train him to let me know he has to potty! Jaxon is doing OK at his training... I was hoping that at 6 months he would be a little further than he is....however, he isn't. Jaxon will hold it for quite a while while I am at work and I try to take him to the bathroom (outside) every 2 hours until bedtime. However, lately, I have been doing a lot of work from home and havent been able to take him out as frequently so he has been having accidents. I know he is totally capable of halding it and waitint until outside, I would just like to know how to train him to let me know when he has to go. Like going to the door or something. I have tried just using pee pads but he takes those and runs around the apt with them. Then I tired the bell at the door but he just knocks that over. HELPPPP!!!!!! |
potty training I got my puppy when he was 12 weeks old. And started trying to put him the bathroom and train him with puppy pads. It was a disaster for like a month. Every day I had to come home from work and clean. :thumbdown I emailed a local doggie daycare and they emailed me a info page on different methods of potty training. We found the quickest and most effective way was kennel training. I know-I felt bad for putting him in there at first cuz at first he didnt even get it and had accidents for like the first week, but like the first day we put him in it and started the routine, he went to the door!! I just checked and unfortinately they got a new website and did not put this back up. Although I hated to leave Teddy in a small confinded area like that, I had him fully potty trained like like 5 months old (like no accidents at all). It takes alot of patience, but I will definately be worth it in the end. Now he's out in the open of the bathroom and I don't have to worry about him going to the bathroom anymore! |
thanks so much! I have actually been crate training him since I got him in june and he does REALLY well with not peeing or pooping in his crate while I am away.... The porblem comes when I let him play once I get home... I wish he would go by the door, or cry or SOMETHING to let me know he has to go potty! :( |
potty training As soon as you get home from work, take him outside and don't go back in until he uses the bathroom. It may take a while, you might even play with him while your outside, then watch his eatting habits. A few minutes after he eats (say 15-20) take him outside again and let him use the bathroom. After he does use the bathroom, give a treat and praise him endlessly. After he gets the idea that u really like that (cause yorkies are people pleasers), he'll start going to the door. BUT look for signs cause teddy's first signs of asking to go outside were extremely suddle. He still goes up to me, put his paw on my hand, and just stares at me sometimes. You'll just have to pay close attention. I ask him sometimes..."wanna go outside?" And he'll walk to the door. If you say the word "outside" everytime you go outside, he'll start associating it. Then after a while, you can just ask him and he'll walk to the door. |

I did the same as the above mention i kept saying "wanna go outside" and she just stares at me and gets excited and looks at the door excited - my baby does exactly as the above :animal36 good luck - i started with treats of course then she got it - she tells me when she has to go :) i just got a bell she's kind of scare of it but will try today is first day lol |
I do the same thing with my Leo...he LOVES to go "potties". I have to be careful when i use the word now because any time i say it he starts barking and running around like crazy and going to the door because he's sooooo excited to go potties! It's great. He never has accidents anymore. |
Marbellah does the same LOL :animal36 I say "wanna go outside" then "wanna go potty" me too i have to be careful when i use the word LOL :animal36 she gets excited runs in circles and to the door she's so cute, and sits and looks at me and the door lol |
My family just welcomed our little Trigger into our family about a month ago now. He was born on July 7th. I am trying to train him as well and last week started the bell at the door. When I am ready to take him out I say "Trigger let's go outside and go potty" and ring the bell, he will come running and then I take him out and place him in the spot I want him to relieve himself. When he is done I say "Let's go back inside" and when we get inside the door I have a treat waiting for him. He now knows about the treat because as soon as we hit the inside he turns right around and looks at me. It is so cute. I do think I will change one thing and that is take the treat with me outside and give to him as soon as he does his thing. I think that would make him understand better.:animal36 |
thanks for the support... how long did it take your yorkies to catch on? Also, when do yorkies typically reach their full size? (what age) |
it took teddy about 3 or 4 months to TOTALLY be trained. He is now a year old and he's about 8 lbs. (he's half yorkie, half poodle) |
