When do the "accidents" stop? Hi All...It's been a few years since I've been on YT. I'm glad I found my way back. :) My baby is going to be 5 next month. I did a lot of research before getting her (she's my first dog ever) and figured she would fit perfectly in my lifestyle. I lived alone in a condo and decided to train her inside on pads so she'd have a place to go while I was at work. She did well most of the time. I moved back home to pursue a new career. She stayed in a hallway with her bed, toys, food, water, and pee pads. No matter how long I was gone during the day, there would be nothing on the pad. She'd wait until I got home, run around the table a few times, then go do her business on the pad and get a treat. That was fine. However, she randomly would pee on the carpet...and I never saw her do it. A month ago I moved into a new home. I decided to have the master bedroom and living room floored so she wouldn't pee on any rugs. The living area is pergo and ceramic tile. I figured she'd be fine. Wrong. I left her one day for 2 hours, and she peed on the floor....so much for my rug theory. :rolleyes: I decided to leave her in my bedroom. For the first 2 days she was fine...day 3 she peed on the floor. So I decided to put her in a smaller area...the bathroom. She has her bed, food, water, toys, music, and a pee pad. That has seemed to work. When I come home, there is pee on the pad and I make her go as soon as I get home. She has had a few "accidents" since moving in 5 weeks ago....but not in the bathroom. She has had them when I'm home. I'll go into the kitchen and see pee. She also peed on the carpet upstairs once. It is so frustrating. :mad: She is almost 5 and I feel like she should know better. I feel bad leaving her in the bathroom all day and would like her to be able to enjoy the downstairs area while I'm at work, but I can't even trust her by herself for 2 hours in the area. Can this be fixed? I had thought about maybe outside training her....she will go outside if we go away or out for walks. She gets plenty of exercize running around in the house. But I honestly don't want to train her to go outside...inside is easier for both of us. So, I've heard a lot that Yorkie's are hard to train, they have accidents, etc. But I don't want her having "accidents" anymore. What can I do to prevent them and will she ever be able to stay downstairs in the opened pergo/ceramic tile area without having accidents? She knows where her pad is...I just don't understand why she does it. I anticipate many, many, more years with her. I don't want to have to clean up pee for all of those years. Sorry for the long post....just trying to give the key points to get some advice. Thanks in advance for your help. :) |
Denise, Hi, I just read your post regarding your 5 yr. old Yorkie. Have you maybe thought about going back to "crate training" ? I don't know much about the pee-pad technique, as we are crate training our 2 Yorkie sisters = Mindi and Mandi to go outside to "tinkle". But, alot about what I have read is that no matter what the age of the dog, you can always go back to "crate training" and it will work. Of course, you'll have to reduce the size of her crate so she can only turn around and lay down, or she'll relieve herself in the front of the crate and go to the back to lay down. Our puppies are 16 weeks old and we took the partition out of their crate thinking they were ready, and they weren't. So we put the partition back up in their crate and have started from square one again with taking them out of their crate, outside to "tinkle" then back in the crate. I would have her checked at the vet first, to make sure all is good medically. You say you just moved into a new home a month ago? Could be the stress of the move and a new environment. You could get her an expen and re-train to the pads. |
My Molly had the same problem and she actually had an infection that was making her not be able to hold it. She went on antibiotics and the accidents stopped pretty soon after! |
Luci is 5 years old. Could be a urinary tract infection, or behavioral. At least get a urinalysis, and possibly a urine culture test to rule out infection. Also, after cleanup, use something like Nature's Miracle. |
