Training/Prong Collars My roomate had a friend over and when Nala ran up to her as soon as she came through the door looking for attention as she always does...I aplogized for her hyperness and tried to lead Nala away with a treat. The chick was like "Apparently the treats aren't working" Holding my composure as I am a first time dog owner and am learning as I go...she continued to explain she was an animal behaviorist or something like that and that I should invest in a training collar for Nala. So I go online and look up training collars and did not like what I saw...but then I found prong collars that are supposed to be for smaller dogs...I just wanted to know if anyone has used any of these to train their fur babies? Nala is 5 lbs 4 1/2 months and very rambunctious. I'm waiting for all of her shots to enroll her in obedience school...but I wanted to see if anyone has used these collars. They seem a little cruel. |
Those collars are not for Yorkies as they can cause serious damage. Please wait for your training class. |
"Collars" in general - Prong or for Leash Walking should NOT be used a small dogs ~ You could cause serious damage to her Trachea ~ which can cause to a very rough life of Collapsing Trachea or Death :( |
Yea that's what I figured...but the way this girl was telling me about it, she acted like I was crazy for not getting her the collar. She said the shaking of the can makes dogs neurotic (even though it has stopped Nala from chewing on wires anymore) and that she should be spanked....which is totally opposite of everything I have been told to do...I was just checking...gonna put a training collar on her the next time she comes over and teach her some manners...:thumbdown |
Prongs collars pinch the skin and stab in the neck. They should not be used on small dogs and I wouldn't use them on any dog. |
The girl who told you all that garbage is a LIAR. She knows absolutely NOTHING about training a dog. NEVER put any collar on the dog to use in walking or training, just use a "no-choke" step in harness. Small dogs have very delicate trachea's. |
Maybe this girl has only ever worked with big dogs to whom a pinch collar would feel like just that- a pinch. But for a yorkie, it could be fatal. Your girl is still a baby. She will calm down a bit as she grows up. Hang in there, we know you can do it! |
Please don't use a prong collar on a Yorkie. I took Leo to obedience class when he was almost 6lbs. I used a small choke collar. Used the right way it does not do damage to the trachea. All I ever did with correcting was just a flick of the wrist and give the command. If your roommates friend was an actual animal behaviorist she should have given you some helpful advice not been a snooty B about it. Lori |
I have a German Shepherd that I use that on, but no way would I use one on the yorkies, as some one stated earlier they have delicate tracheas. I have been through alot of training and with some great trainers with Max (GSD) and they would never tell me to do that with the yorkies. Give her time and go through training, people that have never had yorkies don't know what they are talking about, they are strong minded but they have delicate bodies.:) |
I wouldn't put a collar on a yorkie period because they can sustain injury and I can't even imagine using a "training" collar. Maybe she needs to study small breed dogs before giving advise:confused: |

To have them work you need to blow the dog off it feet and cause fear and pain the first time for the dog never to repeat the action again. If use wrong you will only increase the bevaior you wish to stop also you will cause the dog to become use to a prong coller. Prongs can do a great deal of danage to a medium size dog but to a little one they can do a great deaql of harm as in wreaking the dogs tract. I suggest you work on focus and find a good trainer to help you. It is your choice to use what ever tool ios on the market and sold legally so by al mean s if you feel its your only chance do so but the risks are great to hurt the dog. JL |
