barking at people and noises I live in an apartment so every noise Scooby hears he is going crazy with the barking. And if someone comes over he will just sit and bark until they leave. Once he gets to know them after a few visits he will stop, but not with everyone. Any ideas? I have tried to crate him, put him in my room, hold him, told him no, etc. Any ideas among you? |
You might teach him "quiet" or "hush" whichever term you prefer. When he is being quiet say "quiet" and make a hand symbol that you will only use for quiet then give him a teat and LOTS of praise. Then you might try to MAKE him speak by moving your hand like a mouth and saying "speak" and when he barks treat and lots of praise, then say "quiet" with that hand signal and treat. I know it sounds silly but I saw it on "It's me or the dog" and these big Labs took to it immediately so I just did the "quiet" with mine and it really seems to help. Of course sometimes you could blow one of those airhorn canisters things and not get them to be quiet but in the house it REALLY helps. Good luck! |
Get him out and soicalize him more. Have strangers toss him treats at a distance before getting close. JL |
He is very socialized. We have little dogs all around us and he does great! We even meet all the neighbors at the dog park and let them all play. Soo cute to see all these little things running around playing together! BUT, once we get home and are back inside, he starts the barking. |

Get out food treats and change the frame of refrence. Good treats come from people inside buildings. Maybe the shadows of the halls bug him Or maybe it being enclosed and feeling trapped and not able to get away from the person coming at him. Social skills are not just to other dogs and people he knows in a setting he comfortable in. It is also of those he does not know well and in places he does not like. Soical skills is handling people, places, sounds, things and handling without a problem not just liking other dogs. JL |
A couple of mine are bad barkers, thanks to my pom teaching them and I just saw an episode of It's me or the dog where a pom was a bad barker and aggressive and she used a horn. So I went to Walmart today and bought one of those kids bike horns and used it a couple of times and it did stop them. I will try it when they are really going nts when someone comes home or over and let you know if it works. I have tried a spray bottle and coins in a jar and they didn't work so we'll see. |
I will try that JL. Thanks! I have no problem with him voicing his opinion. I just don't like to think of him being upset by somethig I am missing. Hopefully the treats will calm him. Thanks again! |
