Can I get her to switch to a litter box? My ten month old Yorkie pees and poos outside great.....when you ask her, and we ask her often - but she also loves to pee inside!! UGH. She hates to get her feet wet. If there is dew on the grass, or it's raining, or snowy...she will either refuse, or run out piddle a little as if that is all she needs to do and come back begging to get in. If I don't let her in I watch her from a place she can't see me and she will NOT leave the door, she just stands there barking non stop. I've tried the pee pads and she DOES NOT like them, it's almost as if she can't stand the feel of them or something. As soon as I put her on one, she lays down. No matter how much I encourage her she acts like she is in trouble. I think she thinks that is peeing on the floor?? I think I want to try a litter box. I have one that is quite large and has a clear top on it, it's bigger than her kennel in fact.. Has anyone switched to using a litter box????? |
i taught my yorkie to the bathroom in a litter box! I actually trained my puppy to go pee and poo in the litter box...he has one on each floor and hes only 9 weeks and hes doing very very well with it! no more accidents around the house..he likes it much better then going outside..and i think its better so they dont get sick! But i think its a great idea! and everytime he goes to the bathroom in the litter box he gets 15mins of play time all about him..and he gets a pig ear for 10mins..and thats how he started to listen to go pee and poo..now if he doesnt and he goes on the floor he gets time out for 15mins..hope this helps! |
Try putting newspaper over the pee-pad... it work for one of my friend before.. |
I switched my other dog (not a yorkie) to pads from outside. The first thing I did was clean my carpet completely to make sure my dog couldn't find any previous accidents. Then I took a pee pad outside with me and dabbed a bit of his urine onto the pad and sprayed a housebreaking aid on the pad too. I kept doing this and he started going on the pad instead of on the carpet or outside. He still prefers to go outside so I take him out when I can, but I also reward him for going on his pad. I switched my yorkie from a pad to litter. Just put the pad in the litter box and put the litter over it. Worked like a charm. |
Switch to non-dispos pee pads Hi. My girls did not like the disposable pee pads, so met a lady who has bred for decades that helped me out. She is my mentor and gave me some cloth ones that you just wash. If the litter doesn't work out, maybe try them. The first time I just put a little of their pee (sounds gross, but works :-) on the pads and they have used them very successfully. |
Emilio does a mix of both, I trained him to go in a litter pan but with only a wee wee pad in it, no litter, that way it is a defined space for him to relate potty to. I used the housebreaking aid spray in the beginning to help him get the picture. He trained really quickly to it and other than occasional attitude he does well. |
Washable pee pads sound a lot better. I saw those at the pet store the last time I was there. Maybe I'll try 'em. Quote:

Our yorkies are litter trained and it works great however if your yorkie does not like to stand on a pee pad, they are probably not going to like to stand on the litter. Maybe a washable pee pad would be worth trying |
