Only sit on carpet?! Help! So i recently enrolled Luc in training classes. It was soo embarrassing!!!! I went in thinking he would do good since we had already gone over a few basics. Once I get there my baby is terrible... (overexcited i guess). I couldn't get him to sit down!! he's usually very good at sit! So when i went home I practice with him in my bedroom for a bit and he did great. I took him to the living room and he sit fine. Then in the kitchen and he would just stare at me. So I eventually figured out that He wont sit unless he is on carpet or a rug!!! we went to the front door and practiced sit and we have to rugs down, so he would literally walk to the rug and then sit... Any advice on getting him to sit anywhere i tell him to?!!!! I know i need to retrain him in the new environment, but how do i get him to do the initial sit?? sorry this is long!!! |
I had the same problem with Abby. She would sit at home on the living room carpet, then when we went to class the room was linoleum. When I said sit, she looked at me like I was crazy. After we got home, I kept practicing in the kitchen. She didn't like it because she would slide. After I kept training her in the kitchen with treats, she finally got it. She now sits and lays down anywhere. Consistency is the key - I wanted her to learn to sit and lay down anywhere. Your baby will learn. Good luck! Jackie |
When I took my Diva to training classes at our pet smart, she did the same thing. I always took her little leopard print plush rug/mat that I had in her crate to use for her to sit on and yes..when it was time for sitting or laying type training. She will now do it anywhere although she still prefers something under her bum bum. I would suggest taking something and letting her use it in the beginning. Once they get the command down, like Diva, he should do it wherever. If I do make Diva do anything on floors or outside, I try not to make it for too long.... Good Luck! |
I also forgot to add your dog needs action with the command. Just saying the word sit over and over can be like "blah blah blah" to him. Show him what you want him to do as you say the command. Even though Abby could sit on carpet, she wouldn't anywhere else so I would gently show her what I wanted by placing her in the sit position on the linoleum saying Abby, sit then praising her like she was the greatest dog in the world and giving her a treat. Eventually you can eliminate treats and just do the praise! |
Ginger's the same way. My trainer kept a few small carpet squares for the small dogs as many of them had the same problem. I just used those. Eventually, she got over it. She'd still RATHER sit on carpet, but will sit on hard floors too. |
Isn't it funny how they're like that? Max is the same way; he'll sit anywhere that there's a carpet. I originally got him to sit (on command) in the kitchen, when I was going to give him a treat anyway, and I thought I could sort of achieve two things at once; giving him a treat (for something else he did good) AND get him to sit too, as opposed to jumping up to snatch the treat from my hand.....but now, he'll only sit (and he's very good at sitting on command) but he won't sit unless he's on a rug or carpet, b/c that's what he sits on in the kitchen. BUT....if they feel like sitting down on the tile floor, they WILL, LOL. Funny dogs! I think training them to sit anywhere and using a treat will work if you're consistent with it. I'm sure Max will learn to do it. Madison is another issue...I can't get him to sit even if I try to push his tushy DOWN! |
