Crate training and using the ex pen I have been crate training Alfie, which for the most part is working great. When I have been gone for a while, I have been putting him in his exercise pen with a pee pad. He's been missing the pee pad quite often. I'm thinking about leaving him in his crate when I'm gone for the shorter increments, about 4-5 hours. Is that too long to leave him in there? When I am gone for a long time, I will probably continue to leave him in his ex pen. He knows what the pee pads are for as he's gone on them several times, but I think when he gets that much space to wander, he is just more prone to having accidents. Any tips to get him to get used to the bigger space, yet know that he can't just go wherever in his ex pen? Thanks! |
I think 4-5 hours in a crate is fine. Our Wrigley who is 3 months old stays in his crate all night (like last night he was in there from 11:30-7:30 and he didn't whine or bark or anything. Granted I know not everyone is so lucky, but I think they just mostly sleep when they are in a crate. We are crate training him so we don't have as many accidents. So far only 3 accidents (and one was very small). |
3-5 hours at a time is fine. mine just went to sleep. Just be deligent when you take him out and put him on the pad-even if he knows what it is for. Once he goes, give him a treat and/or praise. Now I just leave the crate doors open in the expen. Good luck. |
that is perfectly fine...i believe in crate training! hehe |
Thank you everyone! I just had extreme guilt leaving him in such a tiny area while I was gone. I guess it's okay and he won't hate me for it lol. When I put him in the ex pen, I will probably give him a smaller space as well. |
