Am I doing something wrong? ::::::sigh:::::: Ok. So my little Pasquale is 11 weeks old...i got him when he was 8 weeks old...i've been "trying" to potty train him for 3 weeks. Notice the word TRYING in quotes? That's because whatever i try....he seems to do the opposite. I bring him outside every hour on the hour...sometimes even for a long walk...he holds it UNTIL he gets back inside the house..and then boom..on the tile! I've sprayed pottytraining aid on a pee pee pad and put it in the bathroom . He'll go into the bathroom..smell the pad..and then find a spot on the tile that is clear of pee pee pad and pee there. He's even holding in his poo???? I just dont get it? Is he still too young? I mean i do expect him to have a few accidents....even alot of accidents...but ALWAYS?? Its almost like this is his routine. I dont know what to do...any other suggestions i could try? |
Yes he is still too young, you are expecting way too much too soon. It takes time and patience to train these guys, some of them are not fully trustworthy until they are over a year old. He is not getting the message and understanding what it is that you want. So it's a communication barrier. frequency is not the only key to training. timing is very important. right after they wake up right after they eat, right after playtime. If you take him out at those times he is more likely to potty for you, then praise praise praise. Eventually he will get the message. Do not scold him for going inside unless you catch him in the act then tell him no and rush him outside. Many people use the crate method and crate them when ever they are not being supervised. this works well. |
Are you letting him loose in the house even though he hasn't gone potty on the pad or outside yet? When you are in the house, trainers have suggested leaving them on a leash connected with you, so they can't roam and watch for signs, sniffing the carpet, whining, etc.. and take them out. You will learn their potty schedule quickly! Trainers have told us that even though our yard is fenced, to take them out on a leash and keep saying "potty" or whatever word you want to use and as soon as they go, praise them and give them a treat. Only then let them off a leash to play. I think a big part is not giving them too much freedom when you are potty training! He is a puppy though and young, so he will have accidents. Just praise the heck out of him when he goes potty where and when you want him to go! Patience, it's hard a thing! Good luck! |
When you take him outside....don't stand and expect him to go....walk around as walking stimulates their bowels. |
maybe try first to pee inside by the door on the paper.. so he is more comfortble... and pick him up after his sleep,. playing etc then put him on the paper or outside.. when he hasnt done anything in the first min,. just wait.. if he still doesnt after 10 min or so.. take him back in,. when he starts peeing,. just say loud NO and then pick him up on the paper or outside.. wherever you want him to go. if he is outside,. dont let im in for at least 5 min. and if you want to try a paper.. say go pee pee.. If he does it outside or on the paper whatever you choose in the beginning PRAISE him and give him a little food of his own,. or a small cookie..:) He knows he will get a reward when he does it right :) Also when you do the paper.. and he is ok with that after a few days or weeks put the paper outside and ut him on it there ,. then after a while leave the paper out, but i know he will do fine :) Make hi enthausiastic when he go for a walk and pee or poops.. :) :) :) Also dont gibe him to much space to walk the house. so in the living is ok ,. or kitchen whatever, bu not the whole house. All my dogs were potty trained very fast ,. and i never have trouble with it,. its alot of work and patience.. but its worth the work. :) Good luck , priscilla :) Dont put him outside or punish him when you havent seen him doing it... cause he dont know.. and he probably forgot already |
