Pee pad training This is probably a really stupid question, but is it possible to pee pad train a male after they start lifting their leg? |
I was able to with Miles. I got him when he was 10 weeks old, and trained him to go outside. But I live in an apartment, and I was getting creeped out going outside in the middle of the night...so I decided to pad-train him a few weeks ago (he's now 22 weeks). He had already started lifting his leg (which I thought was kind of early, but whatever!)...and he still was able to be trained. I would give it a shot! :) |
Thanks, I want to get another Yorkie and I wanted a boy. Then I started to think about that. My Sadie goes about 95% of the time on the pee pad, which my neighbors think is gross but oh well it's no different then a cat using a litter box. It's what works for us. I have seen pictures on the net when I was researching litter boxes for dogs and they used one of those large plastic totes. They just cut away one side and the other was left high. The dog would hike it's leg and pee on the high side. I just figured I could use a clothes pin and attach a pee pad to the side and put one on the bottom. |
Yep, that's exactly what I did (except I didn't cut out one side...he just hops over!). :) And what really helped is to find an opportunity to soak up a little bit of his pee on the pad, and then place it in the box. That way it's already scented for him, so he is more likely to go on it. I just kept a bag of treats nearby so I could reward him every single time he went on it. Good luck!!! |
I use a litter pan (medium size) for my little boy, he was only 1 lb when I got him and I put a wee wee pad inside the pan (no litter) and he jumps right over. He doesn't lift his leg at all, he is a squatter. But they just hop right over the side and go in the pan. |
I hope Mr Belvedere stays a squatter! My Crested started lifting his leg and I was so sad, he was so cute squatting. |
