Pad training AFTER yard training My precious is trained to potty outside. I did not have much forethought in that now I see the benefit of training him also on pads. Has anyone trained outside first and then on puppy pads? How did you do it? |
Anyone? |
I would love to kow the answer to that too. I am considering it because winter is too cold here. I won't let her go out without me or my son and we freeze too.;) |
Lady was outdoor trained for years until I was in a car accident and couldn't take her out while I was recovering. Now I am a pee pad convert and would never outdoor train again. :D I put the pads near the back door where Lady scratched to go out. I have one of those really light Seabreeze pens that I circled the pads with after meals, nap, or when she asked to go out. She was frantic at first, scratching the door and she couldn't understand why I wouldn't take her out. She couldn't hold it forever, though, and as soon as she went I did the happy dance and gave her a treat. I also blotted up a bit of urine from the wet pad with the new pad to "scent" it for her. It only took her a couple of days to figure out that this was a pretty easy way to get treats! :D Of course, years later she still expects a treat. She will sit on the pad (or lie down if I take too long) and bark until I give her her Itty Bitty Buddy Biscuit. If I don't take the pad up right away, she'll go back to it and try to get another treat out of me! There are so many advantages to having a toy breed dog pad trained. |
we were pad trained and then going outside confused him. he would hold it outside then pee when he got in the house. now he only poos on the pad in an emergency. i think it confuses them. |

blotting some urine on the new pad works wonders! this is how my guy picked it up so quickly and the treats!! i use buddy biscuits as well and swear he even pretends to go on the pad to get a treat. he started to gain weight so i use the nutrical as a treat b/c he loves it so much! |

I, too, am trying to pad train my little one since he likes going inside so much. I put his pad in the bathroom (since thats where he likes to go especially when i go ) with some of his urine on it. Well now he sniffs it and must be thinking to himself..."hmm yah...good idea..i should go pee" then goes off the pad and tinkles on the floor....ughhhhhh!! I'm like charlie brown..i cant win!!! |
Ughhhh I completely feel your pain. I have a female that is almost 4 and a male who just turned one. When I got the male he was puppy pad trained, but didn't want to do it at my place. My older female would only go on the pad if she was secluded in a room that only had tile. Grr. So NOW, I'm at a new apartment and cannot gate them in the kitchen. They can't be left in cages because they bark the whole time I'm gone. We've put puppy pads allll over the dining room (where they like to do their business) and sometimes they go on them. However, they still go wherever else they please :( It's chaos here right now. |
