He won't come to me, but will come to my roommate :( Alfie is coming along nicely with his training (he's 14 weeks). But he seems to almost prefer my roommate and it crushes me. Whenever I call him he won't come at all or he'll start to come and stop halfway. When my roommate calls him, he runs right to her. :( It's great he's coming and all, but he's my baby and I want him to come to me as well! Is he associating me with the unpleasant things I must do to keep him healthy and clean (taking him to get his shots, bathing him, brushing him, etc)? I play with him a ton and treat him like royalty lol. He's a bit spoiled by me, as he should be :). Do you all have any tips to help him come to ME?! Thank you! |
Just keep practicing the come command with treats. Also try not to take it personally. I have one dog that is my shadow she is right with me all day and she wont come to me only my Husband. I think she does it because she views him as the pack leader. Good luck |
I used to have a yorkie(he got stolen:()and he would only come to my husband. He would bite me and not him, but stick to your guns and keep practicing. He knows you love him:) |
Don't feel bad. That is pretty common for a yorkie. I know it hurts your feelings, but try not to let it. Just keep working with him. You're his mommy and his disciplinarian. He may look at your roommate as his playmate.:D |
Why not cheat alittle. Have little pieces of his favorite treat in you hand and when he comes give him a pat and a treat. You will be his favorite person soon enough.;) |
I have a theory on this that made me feel better. Our situation was not exactly the same, but I think the theory might still apply! At home, Roxy and I are together constantly. And you described it perfectly - I treat her like royalty - and she loves it! But when we go to puppy class, she literally won't even look at me. It is like she is totally boycotting me. I finally decided it is because I am always so readily available and receptive to her attention. No challenge for her at all. The rest of her world sees her as a cute little dog, but not as their baby. I am the vanilla ice cream - everyone and everything else is the hot fudge. But I can tell you, even though hot fudge is great, it just doesn't cut it without the vanilla ice cream! And you know, when she is tired, or wants to cuddle, or this past week with her hip surgery, she has totally been my dog. I'll bet your baby knows that you are her person, and I'll bet you are the one she deeply loves and counts on as the constant in her world. It is just like being a mom to kids - they might think the other kids have cool moms, but they wouldn't trade their own for anyone elses! |
It must be in their genes....They all sleep with us until someone visits, and it's mommy and daddy who? |
Thank you so much for your advice and putting it in perspective. I really was beginning to think he preferred my roommate over me and it does hurt. I've been giving him treats today. The funny thing about it though, he'll lean in to get it then try to run off WTH?!! I know that I need to be consistent with it though and hopefully he'll catch on. Yet, he only goes potty for me. My roommate tried to take him out a little while ago just before I got home. I took him out five minutes later bc I was gone for a while and he definitely needed to go. He went for me. I guess that's good, right? lol |
Although my husband loves Harley now, he was not keen on getting a dog when I first brought the subject up. I tell Harley all the time to remember that "daddy" didn't want you before you came, yet somehow I don't think he cares! Like you said, I take him to the vet, bath him, lock him up for the day when I leave for work, daddy just rescuses him when he gets home, and is there to play. |

You are so right about that. When people visit its like who is mommy & daddy. I had a friend stay over a few months ago and guess where my babies slept...with her:eek: They sleep with me every night so I was surprised. What traders! |
