Aggressive biting and growling!!!! Hello everyone, I've just adopted a 13 wk. old yorkie, and she's starting to bite and growl at me, the owner. She bites at my pants, she growls at me when I try to pet her or pick her up. What should I do? |

Right now she's only being a puppy but it can change if it's not corrected. Give her lot's of safe chew toys. No raw hides or nylabones. Sit on the floor and play with her. Teach her what is right and what is wrong by correcting her when she does bite you. Tell her no, firmly and put one of her own chews into her mouth. They are smart, she will get it after being corrected a couple of times. Buddy still growls when he's playing. It sounds very threatening but is not. They constantly challange you are they grow up. Just like children. Gently hold her mouth closed when she does bite you finger's or hand and say no biting each time. Praise her when she stops. Belive me praise, praise, praise will do it. I've firmly said no and I've also tried to put her in her kennel once she started biting me, but it wasn't successful. |

Thanks for the advice. I'm obviously new to this. My first dog was a rottweiler and she didn't even bite at me. But once again thanks for the advice. |
Hi Hello and welcome to the group, Denisse. Pixel is my first Yorkie, too, and I've found her to be very different to the other dogs I've had in the past. She's wonderful, though, despite the various "issues" (like potty training headaches). She wasn't terribly aggressive when she was younger (she's only 10 months right now!) but she certainly did like to bite when she played. I kept taking my hands away while telling her "no bite" and promptly distracted her attention with one of the chew toys she could have. It takes constant repetition, but it's worth it. :) |

Welcome to YT! Sebastian is my first Yorkie (and dog for that matter), and it has definitely been a learning experience. Sebastian has had a lot of nipping issues! I have found what works the best for me is to say a firm no, stop moving (hand movements made him think I was still playing), and look away from him until he calmed down. Once he was calm I would hold out my hand and if he bit again I would say no and ignore again. I would keep offering my hand until he licked it (instead of biting) and then I would praise like crazy saying "Good Kisses"!!! It has worked really well. Now if he starts to get nippy he will switch over to licking really quickly. It's really cute :). |
Think of it like a two year old child They will test you. I picked up one of mine a few weeks ago, brought her up to my neck for a snuggle, and she promptly bit me on the nose. I had a bruise on my nose for four days. Then a couple of weeks ago she bit me on the ear. Dogs do that with one another so the owner has to teach them not to nip/bite. Jillian is the only one I have that does much nipping, but what's worked for me is to give her a firm no, then tell her she hurt me and I'm sad, then put her down. A Yorkie's biggest nightmare is lack of attention from their people. Afterward, she will come back and give some kisses. She licked my nose and my ear like she knew she had crossed the line and was trying to fix them. |
