Potty Regression? I have had Harley for 3 weeks now and he was doing wonderfully with his potty pad, even going some on his own. However the last few days we have had more misses than hits! I thought maybe we had gotten used to him not having accidents and we just weren't paying as much attention, but we can go into the bathroom with his pads and he will pee two foot in front of them, and if I put him in there alone, he will pee right in front of the door. He had never pooped on the floor until just the other day and has had three accidents since. Has anyone else experienced anything like this. He is 14 weeks old so I know this is no where near the end of the process, but I just don't know what happened! |
:( I have been seeing the same trend with Tobi. He does so good for a long time, goes by himself without being told but then all of a sudden for a couple of days it's as if he has had no training at all! Wish I knew what causes him to do that........ Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks |
Marty TOO I found that Marty does that too. Its hard to reward good behavior when he sneeks-a-pee. He has never been good at telling me its time to go outside. Sorry that I don't have any advice further than 'reward good behavior' but I'll keep checking this thread for advice. Any will be welcome! |
Hey. I am having the same problem! He has been doing the same thing! He was doing a wonderful job holding and going outside and this is the second day in a row he has peed in the apartment again. I don't know what the deal is. He doesn't do well in the kennel. He barks, gets mad, and rolls the kennel around the living room. So we have decided that since he does so well holding it we would let him stay in our bedroom. We puppy proofed it and gave him lots of things to do. He doesn't have the accidents when he is home alone but does them when we are here. I know it takes awhile but it does get old pretty fast. Hopefully he does better from now on. I will keep checking the thread for advice. Although, I have heard it can take up to a year before they are fully potty trained if not longer. |
I have a 9 month old boy, Emilio that is doing this periodically as well. I had him potty trained in about 2 weeks when I got him at 3 months old. I trained him to a litter pan but with just a wee wee pad inside of it, no litter. He did so great it blew my mind. Now he goes thru these periods usually a few days or so where he will hardly go in it at all, he will go on the floor instead. Always in the same room as his pan. It is so frustrating, when I know he knows what to do, all I can think is that he is upset about something and when he gets over it he goes back to his pan. We go crazy when he goes in it praising him and giving treats. I don't know, I wish someone had an answer to this one!!!! |
My Littlest Mac too slips up. I think it's a case of two steps forward - one step back. We just have to get beyond this and they'll start getting it right on track again - I HOPE!!! :animal36 |
OK start again from the begining and ignore anything he does wrong. IF they sneak off to go pee they have learned it is the safe way to pee they are scared to do it any other way. So lots of gentle praise and food rewards everytime they do it right and walk away if you must to calm down if they get it wrong and they will. Just before it locks in their brains they will back slid and you get upset and bang you are back to the start all over again. JL |
Argh! Oh, I feel your pain, everyone. I truly, truly do. I love my little girl with all my heart. I've wanted a Yorkie forever, so now that I finally have one, she's my little darling. But her "accidents" are driving me crazy! I just don't know what to do. When I brought her home in December, she was 8 weeks old and had already been doing her business on pee pads. She had no trouble adjusting to my house, using the pee pads pretty much 98% of the time -- she occasionally missed the pee pad, but because she was positioned weirdly with front feet on the pad, but hind end over. Thank goodness for "Get the Odor Out" enzyme stuff; it's fantastic. :) When she was spayed, she had a few accidents during her recovery. That's absolutely understandable. I felt so sorry for the poor little girl and never once minded cleaning up; she was sick from the anaesthetic, so she had several big accidents, poor little soul. (Again, "Get the Odor Out" does wonders!) In a couple days, she was back to using the pads again. Then I steam cleaned the house. It was almost as if that triggered some need to "mark" the entire house. It's like she has completely forgotten that the pee pads exist. She'll be playing with me then suddenly stop, look me in the eye and squat -- or, worse, go running up the stairs to deposit a "present" at the top. I don't get it. I grab her, move her to the pee pad -- at which point she acts all traumatized and won't go. I take her to the pee pads several times a day, but am rarely rewarded. When she slips up and actually uses the pee pad, I make a huge fuss over her and give her a treat. Still, she'll go squat somewhere else a matter of hours later. This is the dog who used to hold it for hours at the dog park then race to the pee pad when we got home! I wondered if the steam cleaning "messed up her chi" or something! I've also been taking her for regular walks; maybe she's confused because she can pee anywhere she likes in the grass? Any thoughts? |

Also any change in peeing always check a UTI is possible. Do not grad her when she goes to pee.... you bet it scary to be grabbed and moved, you can interrupt with a sound and then pick up and put her else where do not grab. When she does go pee were you want it reward calmly not over the top yippee party time behavior just a calm good job little one and a treat. to much praise can be scary too. JL |
Harley has never been punished for an accident. And there is no sneaking about it, he will do it right in front of our face! lol |
My girl would slip up here and there when she was young too. sometimes she would go right at my feet. and we still laugh to this day because she climbed up on my sons back when he was lying on the floor and she pooped on his back. I thought, "I boy I'm in big trouble with this little girl" but she learned and as she developed it was all good. We taught her to use a bell and she rings it to go out(YEAH) but we are under renovation in my home now and she has messed on the floor at least 4 or 5 times. We just simply went back to crate training for a couple of days and she's been back on track ringing her bell:) |
