Males and Pee Pad Problems I brought this up a while back, but maybe there are some new members that might be able to give me some different answers... Chewie freaks out once he smells his pee pad then he starts digging and pulling it apart with his nails and teeth. They're coming straight from the bag. I believe they are Nature's Miracle Quick Results Training Pads (they're green). I test his reaction to them once a month and it never changes. He shreds his other brand of peepads too but not right away. Due to this, pee pad training has been next to impossible. Will this get better once he gets fixed maybe because the pheremones on the pads are really strong to him? I know about the washable pads but they just arent desireable to me because I don't want the pee and poo germs just fermenting in the pad, getting on his feet and tracking them around...i'm just a germphobe, LOL! |
Why don't you try buying regular human underpads with no scent to attract him? You can scent them yourself by blotting up a small amount of urine from the used pad. I bet he tears them apart because of the scent. Walmart, Sams or any drug store has them in the adult diaper section. It is much cheaper to buy the unscented ones anyway. |
Hmmm, never thought of the human underpads. I tried the pee blotting but he still went nuts after smelling it. He acted more confused because I guess he smelled him and the pheremones. I guess my main question is, after he's fixed, will pee pad potty training be slightly easier due to their urges being "removed"? I also was told that sometimes after being fixed, males dogs wont lift their leg to pee anymore. Some tend to squat like girls... |
He may just not like to use a soiled pad! :D Lady is like that. She'll sniff and snort and run backwards if her pad is wet. I have to change it after each use. Has he already started to lift his leg? If he has, he won't start to squat now. You can make him a "target" for his pad. I know people fill milk jugs, etc. with sand or kitty litter to weight them down, then wrap a pad around them. I think they even sell little fire hydrants for that purpose. :D |
THat happened to me too. My little Gracie loves to shred them the moment I pull them out (the green ones too!). My solution - pull them out of the plastic bag and let them air-out outside for a day to get some of the strong scent out of them. It worked! Part of me didn't want her to stop shredding them because I would come home and her face would be full of little white fuzzies. I would ask her what she did and she looked at me as if to say, "I HAD TO CLEAN THIS MESS UP BECAUSE FROTO MADE THIS BIG MESS!" Yeah - of COURSE I believe her! heehee :p |
