Guinness will be 1 yrs old in October.

He will not stop the chewing of our hands. I have tried everything people say. Give him time outs, stern NO! tons of chew toys, redirection. It works when he's going after our feet we use the coins in a tin can.

He wants to be pet, but he won't stop trying to bite you while you do it. I am to the point that I just don't want him in my lap because he can't stop. I don't understand it. I've never had a dog who will not listen and gets worse the more you discipline. He's a stubborn little dude, he really is.

He is still having accidents in the house, but he does use the weewee pads most of the time. He's too old to not be potty trained by now.

I just feel like I'm failing him and I know I am.

What is the most effective way to keep him from biting. I wish there was ONE and then JUST use that. He lunged at my face today and that just made me put him in his crate.

Nipping...

I have the same problem, I think my Yorkie is teething...I got her chew toys, I put her in her pin to punish her, sternly say "NO"...but she acts as though she doesn't understand. :animal-pa I will have to use the tin can trick see if that helps! Some one told me to try getting a baby teething ring for my puppy, or freezing a wash cloth for her to chew on? Have you tried any of these yet? I am to the point I would try almost anything!

Lily (my puppy) won't even use training pads either. How did you get your to use them? Sometimes she goes outside but that is only when my bigger dog has to go outside!

I think you have the advantage with an older dog going out, she will probably start following that, keep it up!

He was using weewee pads before I got him at 6 weeks old so I'm lucky he's using something.

Your not a bad trainer your trying and thats all you can do. Something we did with Chachi when he would chew on our feet was we put bitter apple on our feet He quit doing it a couple times after tasting that so he must have thought our feet taste like that all the time Its worth a try

I think I'm going to dig ours out again. When we first tried it, the little stinker wasn't phased by it. Thanks for reminding me :)

I would start using those bitter sprays on my hands, and really disipline him for going after your face,

Have you tried yelping and pulling back quickly? Even if it doesn't hurt, make it seem like it's the most excruciating pain ever. Your baby doesn't want to hurt you, and it seems like he just wants attention. If you make it clear that biting hurts, then he might go a different route for attention. Just a suggestion! Good luck!

It gets his attention but it doesn't stop the behavior. I think that's my biggest issue.

I'm starting to think the noise level and activity in my house with my two little boys is playing a huge factor. He's not around them unattended and they do NOT pick him up. But he's around quite a bit of action.

Deenie- I'm right there with you! I've never had a puppy before that liked to bite and nip and chew on my fingers, ankles, and toes sooo much! And what makes it worse is that his teeth are SHARP! The only thing that works for us is spraying Grannick's Bitter Apple Spray on my hands, arms, and toes (I have to cover my whole body with the stuff :eek: because thats the only way Wall-E won't bite me). If the bitter spray you use doesn't work, maybe try a different brand (some brands are stronger than others) of bitter spray or even try making your own home-made "bitter spray" of something that you know your pup will find sour... vinegar maybe? Just a suggestion!

Sounds like you are doing all the right things. Some of these guys just need a little more time.

One question: How's his exercise level? A tired dog is a happy dog.

You need to yelp and nip at him when he does this and then walk away. Dogs do not understand the word NO, they do not understand time outs. Speak to him in the same language that another dog would.

Show your teeth, growl low in your throat and if he doesn't heed the warning, then snap at him, teeth bared.

For the lunging at your face that requires an instant snap and if that doesn't scare him, then instantly on his back and in his face growling and baring teeth.

Many will disagree with me on this, but before you dismiss it give it a try.

I agree with you!! When you take a pup too early from his mom and littermates they haven't learned from the other dogs yet how to act. The other puppies would yelp and jump back and bite back and then he would learn not to do it. Brooke eventually grew out of it and every time she would try and bite my hand I would yelp and she would lick my hand. She understood what the yelp meant and now she will try and play bite my hand but never nips anymore!! Good luck!!

He was taken away much too young. I will never do that again. I'm going to try the bitter apple AND the dominance stance with yelping. I hope it works. I just hope he's not too old and set in his ways by now.

Something else you can look into is his teeth. I had a friend that tried to chew on her hands and a trip to the vet found she still had a baby tooth in back at 15 months old. removing that stopped the nipping.

Someone is going to say something to me about this, I know it, but I don't care. I don't mind my dogs NIBBLING. I've taught them limits and they know better not to bite and never have.
