playing with the potty pad!! grrrr my 9 week old was really good about using his potty pad at nite and when i'm gone. I keep him in the kitchen that i gated off. i put lots of toys, his bed, food and water in with him but now he'll throw around his potty pad like its a blanket or something. as a result he has nothing to 'go' on so in the morning, there's poo and pee on the kitchen floor. i even put 2 down in hopes that he'll just 'play' with one of them and i used the adhesive ones that get 'taped' down. what should i do to stop him from doing this??? |
it happened again this morning...poop and pee everywhere b.c he threw around the pee pads like they're a toy. |
We had the same problem with our puppy. He'd shred the pad and then have an accident. We tried double-sided tape, but that didn't work. We got one of these: PetEdge: Clean Go Pet Puppy Pad Holder These do a great job of getting the pads to stay put. At first, he actually unhinged the handles and pulled the holder apart to get at the puppy pad. Then I put some tabasco sauce on the handles so he couldn't any longer. Since then, he's gone on his pad and he hasn't played with it at all. |
Don't waste your money on a pad holder. Your baby will find a way to get it loose, shred it or otherwise get it where it is not supposed to be. Get washable pads. You will love them. Little Bit makes wonderful washable pee pads. I had this issue with Gracie. She eventually grew out of it, long before I learned about the washable pads! |

I spray some chew-stop on the pads (front and back) so he doesn't tear it up. It works without fail! He doesn't bother messing with it after he takes one bite of it. The one time I forgot, I came home to a shredded mess :p |

Washable pads do help alot because they are heavier and they can't shred them like paper. They are not foolproof, however. They can sometimes turn a corner over or move it, but nothing like the way they destroy the paper ones. |
I bought two washable pads and mine will not go on them. They use them for sleeping pads. I even tried putting a pad on the washable pad. With the pad holder all nine dogs will use a pad and Darla our new Biewer who would tear up anything she can get ahold of leaves the pad in the holder alone. I have to change the pad quite ofter but it works fine. |

I have two of the pad holders. I think they work miracles. They are kind of expensive but are well worth it. |
We tried the holders, the puppies could still pulverize the pee pad to powder. We now have switched to cloth pads for puppies once they discover they have the power to shred the paper ones. It makes for more laundry but I worry less about their inhaling the paper powder and shreds. |
My lil one did the same thing when she was a puppy :eek: (she is now 1 1/2yrs). I started having her in an xpen in the kitchen with her food/bed/potty pad/toys and she would shred the pee pad every day and do her business on my kitchen floor also, so I tried the wizdog and she managed to get the disposable out of that also... I switched to the washable pee pads and haven't had a problem since. She just recently graduated to having the full run of the kitchen during the day so I can only say, hang in there, it does get better as they get older....just at times it seems like they will never outgrow these bad habits...but they eventually do... :animal36 |
what great info, I myself had this problem. Even with all the toys and chewies I would put in there for her to do at night, she would still shred it to pieces and potty on the floor. I never thought to use the washable ones, duh! |
Mine did the same thing. I found the pad holder with bitter apple misted on the pads and edges of the holder discourage her from tearing them up. |
I baught a pad holder from PetSmart that was only about 5 bucks. It is just a metal rod fram with foam corners. The foam corners have slits that allow you insert just the 4 corners of the pad. It has worked well for us. You might want to try one of these. Jeri and Harley |

I had a similar problem with my 5 month old pup Max. He was okay when we were around but if we left him to go out for a couple of hours in his exercise pen we would come back to a mess. There would be pieces of his pee pad torn to bits and thrown all over his pen. I was upset but at the same time I couldn't stop laughing because he had bits of pee pad hanging off his mouth, chin & ears. However it became less funny after 8 times of trying to clean it up. I started to look up dog litter boxes. The two that caught my attention was Pet Loo and Ugodog. The problem I found with the Pet Loo was it was very expensive and they used artificial turf which can get messy and difficult to clean up after they poo. I settled on the Ugodog when was cheap and easy to clean. The good things is you can use newspaper to line the tray then it is covered by two plastic racks with holes. This allows the dog pee to drain to the newspapers and prevent the dog from tearing up the newspaper. So far it has been very good. Plus I save from not having to purchase anymore pee pads. Hi Ted E Bear. Yes I am very happy with Ugodog and it didn't cost me an arm and leg like Pet Loo. What I did to get my Max used to his new toilet was when I first brought home the Ugodog I waited until he peed on his regular pee pad. I then set up the Ugodog with the newspaper and wiped the soiled pee pad on to the newpaper. I then put the plastic Ugodog covers on and Max had no problem going pee on there. I had to do this only once. Therefore I didn't need to buy any sprays to attract him to the Ugodog. After that I would just change the newpaper every night and wipe down the Ugodog with a paper towel and some disinfectant. Hope that helps you out. Happy training! The Dogs Obedience Training Blog |
