Stairs training is a nightmare!!!!!!!! So Jack refuses to jump up onto the couch or off of the couch. I decided to get a set of stairs to help him get up and down when he pleases instead of waiting for one of us to help him. But he is too afraid to use them. We tried using treats to encourage him to go up and down to get use to them but he won't even use them. How do I get him to use them? Do I just leave it there and wait for him to do it himself? Please help. I am getting really frustrated. All I wanted to do was make his life a little easier. |
He's just scared. When I first got mine for my furkids were terrified of them. At first Gabby was the only one who used the stairs to go up and she still only uses it to get on the bed but will jump down. Recently she's been waking me up to get her down because my bed is high. Mimi refuses to use them at all and she's the reason why I bought them because she has LP on her back knees. Now after several months of having the stairs Timmy just started to use them to get up on the bed about 3 days ago. It will take time....I recommend just leaving them there. |
Aw. That's awfully cute. Since we are working on potty training, most of the house is baby gated off so we just carry him to bed. Our goal is the couch. Hopefully he will get it. Our cat modeled off how it is done and he just watched her like, "Yeah you go ahead and do that. I just want the treat and I wouldn't be caught dead on those!" lol. Hopefully he gets it. Jack has training orientation tonight. I wonder if they would have any techniques. Thanks for your input! :D |
We just got stairs for our Blossom. She was afraid at first but if you guide her with your hands she'll go. I don't know how to explain but I kept my hands around her just very lightly so she knew she wouldn't fall and she tried it with help. Put the treats down, that helps, and keep encouraging her. Just hold on so lightly that she's doing it herself but still has safety around her body. Good luck and don't give up, it takes time for them to get used to it. Hope that helps. :aimeeyork |

I agree with Timmy, it just takes time and your little one will be climbing those stairs like a pro :) We built a step/sitee for Porkie so he can climb on the bed. It took some doing to get him to try it but now he loves it and he flies up and down it at will :) |
It didnt take Bentley too long to start jumping down off the bed or the couch. we have only had him for two and a half weeks and he's doing fine with it. but he isnt able to jump up because of the height. but to get him to start jumping down, whenever he was at the edge of the bed or the couch we would just encourage him to do it, and praise him whenever he did. |
Scooter will jump on and off the couch, no problem and go UP the hall stairs but is afraid to go DOWN the stairs. I hope with time and coaxing he will learn not to afraid of going down. |

Hang in there. After months of carrying Scooter down the stairs, and I just posted on how is afraid to go down.......today he followed me down the stairs and spent the afternoon going up and down with his sister Kay T. Thank you God!!!! This was after another vet appointment, so maybe he's thinking "I better start doing what mommy wants me to or she'll take me back there again". ;) |
Hey everyone! Thank you for all of the replies. He has gone down the stairs and that was because I came home, hid around the corner and called his name. He hasn't really used them since. Hopefully he will pick up on it. Thanks again everyone. |
Everyone pretty much hit it on the nose, but with my Lola, she wouldn't use stairs at first either. As she got older (and bigger) she was less afraid of them though and started using them more. When I started, I started with one single small stair. I would get her to go up that and reward her. Then when she was comfortable, moved up to 2 stairs, and rewarded her. It took a lot of patience and consistency, but if they're motivated enough, they'll do it. I wouldn't pick Lola up when she whined by the bed, and eventually she was so motivated to come on the bed that she conquered the steps! Just takes time, as all training does. Good luck! |
He Did It!!!!!!!!!! OMG!!!!!!! JACK WENT UP THE STAIRS TONIGHT!!!!!!! He was putting two paws up on the couch like he normally does to tell us he wants up and we just ignored him. He put two paws up on the first step so I made a big deal out of it.... just talking no petting. He got off the step and tried to reach up on the couch. We ignored him again. So he got up on the first step and walked from one side of the first step to the other side then off again. I have to admit we all busted up laughing. It was super cute. He tried his two paw approach again but it of course failed. Then all of a sudden he just ran right up the stairs as if he had done it a thousand times before. This just made life so much easier. I'm not sure about coming down the stairs though. We haven't made it that far. I am SOOOOOOOO excited. Thank you all for your suggestions and comments. It made much easier. I was beginning to think he would never do it but you all reassured me that it takes time..... well I guess so. Thank you all again! |
That's great!!!! I'm so happy for you! Now that I'm thinking about it, I don't really think Lola goes down the steps as much as she uses them to go up. Just to let you know, I think going down might be harder (or scarier) for them. So be patient. As you can see, time pays off! I heard though, as a rule of thumb, you shouldn't let them jump off something that they can't jump up on. I'm very glad he's accomplished the going up part! That's very exciting for you! I know for me, the hardest part about training, is the waiting part :p. Good luck!! |
