Fighting Yorkies Help!
 

Hello!
I have 2 female dogs, both are 8months old. One is Heni a purebred Yorkie with papers, the other is a Yorkie/bichon mix, Arshas, 10 days younger. I got them a month apart, Heni in Jan, and when she wouldn't quit barking at 4am, Arashas in Feb. They used to get along.

2 Weeks ago Heni the purebred went into heat. My dogs used to have "spats" and fight for attention, but since this heat, they fight like vicious animals. I am reminded of cats mating, fur flys everywhere and when I broke up the fight, I got bit on the thumb badly. I've tried muzzels, water bottles, loud noises, pinning them both to the ground and showing that i'm alpha. Nothing has worked. I need help.

Should I get them both fixed? I don't want to bred this kind of Temperament. Alone they are the best little girls ever. Together they are fighting machines. How about shock collars? I don't know what to do, in the same room they stare start to grawl and then, kaboom! I've had to zone off my house because of this, and I don't know what to do next. Being they are both yorkie.. they are both head strong. The last fight my hubby got bit on the leg badly. The biting of us isn't intentional I know that.

Will Obedience classes help this? Can we even do obedience classes if they act like this?

I would recommend getting them both fixed ASAP. Shock collars are a no no for these little babies. Get them fixed and see what happens if not you will need to rehome one of them.

So sorry you are going through this.

Many times a pair of un-spaded females will not get along in the same household. Spaying them may help...

Does having them spade help? Everything i've read so maybe/maybe not. Sometimes it says spay one, that makes them alpha.. but not sure if any of that is even true. Any more insite for a newer pet owner?

How come you say no to shock collar they make them for our wt class. My girls are 7 pounds.

With anything it may or may not help that includes obedience classes...it my or may not help. Do you plan on breeding?

I had hoped to bred only because, when these dogs are pretending to be only dogs.. they are the bestest little girls. My Heni is so princess like, hates water, tall grass and old water to drink. She loves being carried around, carrots, and sleeping right next to my hubby. My Arshas is well barnyard, we finally broke her of poop eating, but she loves to bath, her favorite toy is a slipper she shoves her head inside and wrestles with on the floor, she is 50/50 bichon/yorkie. My hubby's family has never ever had this issue with dogs. They raised and bred schnauzers for years, and ever had females act like this.

Well the reason you read it may or may not help...is because it may or may not...correct the problem. ;) There isn't a definitive answer.

Shock collars are a training method by fear. It's never a good idea to train by fear. To be honest, I'm not certain they would realize the fighting is the reason they were being shocked.

Btw, you mention their qualities as reasoning for breeding...but realize they can't reproduce themselves.

If you read a shock collars instructions they say do not use on dogs under 8 LBS. I know of one person that had a bichon die of heart stress due to a shock collar and he was 7 months old.

I have gone through this with my male (intact) and female (spayed), but I refuse to give up. He sleeps in a separate xpen than the girls and I still put him down to the ground when he does it. I have found that when I baby him and kiss him too much he gets the "wrong idea" and then starts to act up. I watch animal planet all the time and love Cesar and Victoria and find all of their work to be very right on. I live for those shows and it has helped immensely. I wouldn't give up on them! I received that very sage advice on here a number of times. Just an opinion tho....I will be paying attention to the outcome as experience is the best teacher and this is the best place to be for experience!!!!!:thumbup:

If you don't want to spay, just keep them apart until your purebred goes out of heat. My female get very "antsy" and aggressive when she is in heat. After heat, everything is back to normal (whatever normal was before heat).

I found collars that are for less than 8 called tri-tronics? Right now fear seems to be the way to go, the canned air horn is working somewhat. Both dogs drop what they are doing and shake.. not the reaction I want, but they aren't drawing blood, ripping ears, clawing eyes.. or Biting us. My thumb is now infected, I get to see doc this week. My hubby leg is slowly getting better but he still limps. I get dirty looks for the muzzles but, oh well.. My purebreed attacked our best friends 80pound rot/germ mix. Thank gosh for its good temper, it swatted her out of the way.. and than.. like magic they were friends. Why can't i do that.../sigh

I've read other forums but most end up with people ranting at eachother like a soap opera, LOL. I did do penny's in can and than a jar, didn't work. If the canned air horn works, what about a dog whistle? Do they still sell dog whistles. I'm trying to explore every route possible before I need collars or surgery or to Re-home one of them. One way or another the biting, fighting, pissing on our bed out of retaliation for the muzzle is gonna stop. I love my dogs, but we are mentally and physically exhausted.

I have just one thing to add..don't carry them too much. When any dog is being carried and their higher than others, their status is "elevated" in their mind. My only yorkie tends to fight if I carry him to a friend's house with another yorkie but if I let him walk himself in, with a leash he does well. I also used to carry him on walks when I see other big dogs and he will growl at times. Now, I just scan my path and when I see a dog at a distance, I cross the road with him walking by himself and he does a lot better.

thank you so much for that advice potter. I never noticed but when hubby has them in both arms, one in each, they don't tend to fight at all. Right now the Yorkie's heat is near end and the bichon's is starting.. /rolls eyes. These girls when alone have the best little dispositions, but together are just crazy.

I know alot of posts have said not to train with fear, but there are things in this world I want them to be afraid of, the Road outside my house, biting eachother in massive hair ripping, blood drawing fights, and biting Us.

Accidents in the house, Tping the house ( from the roll on the bathoom wall) chewing up mail, hiding socks, is all fine with me, but this Vicious fighting & biting of eachother and us is gonna have to stop.

So first collars, and if that doesn't work, I will rehome. I wanted pets to have have a compainion while i'm walking, jogging or gardening. I don't know how much longer I can take this kind of behavior.

i also have a problem with 2 yorkies fighting, i have just got 2 8 week old yorkshire terrier males, they are pedergree from a good breeder. they are fine when you are holding them but when the are in the garden or in there crate they dont stop fighting. i have tryed all this ceaser millan stuff with the pretend bite on the side of the neck but it just makes them squeal and i then feel bad.
what should i do???
