Transition from pads to outside potty Hi All! I am new to the forum and am very excited to hear from you - many of you sound very knowledgable. I have one issue with Louie that I would like to work on perfecting soon. He uses the potty pads pretty well (sometimes he misses the pad, but gets close)! But, he doesn't like to go outside. Sometimes when he first wakes up, I will take him out right away and he might go after a long while, but he mostly goes on the cement and not the grass. I would really like him to go outside and use the potty pads only when we are at work. We have already associated the word "potty" when he goes on the pads, so he should know the word... Any advice would be greatly appreciated! |
Hey. I don't know how much this will help you. But Jack use to do all of his business on the cement but would never use the potty pads inside. Yeah I know he's just a little off the beaten path some days.... lol.:D But he eventually went inthe grass. Being said, I have heard of people that start the pad in the original place and gradually move it to the door (like a glass patio door would be best so he can see the pad just outside). Then move it into the grass until you get to the spot you would like him to use. You can eventually take the pad away once he is good about going outside. One thing I have learned and it was the hard way. Find his motivation (i.e. Jack loves cheese so get gets a bite size piece when he pees outside and then again when he poops outside.) Once you find what he likes, only give it to him when he goes on the pad (and then eventually when you get him outside). It's a special treat until he is potty trained that he doesn't get at any other time. He will work to get it. Plus when he goes sucessfully on the pad or outside give him praise like he saved the world and pay a lot of attention to him. He will catch on. Good luck. I hope this helps. |
Thank you! That will definitly help. Do you think giving him a special treat (like cheese) is okay even though he doesn't eat people food? |
I thought the same thing too because I heard that it makes them constipated. I looked for hours and I couldn't find anything that says it isn't good for them. Jack hasn't been constipated yet. I don't feed Jack table scraps while we are eating. What I do is buy fat free low calorie string cheese and cut into little round pieces (on the thinner side) then I cut those round pieces into quarters. They are bite sized and we have not had any problems with him begging for food while we are eating. Otherwise, you can always try to find treats that are small that that he may like and keep them as something special. We use Lil Bil Little Jacs for other training. They are soft and are chicken liver flavor. I need to get Jack to training class so I need to get going. Good luck and keep us posted with his progress.:D |
It's a good transition to slowly move the pad to the door. Another way to get him interested in going on the grass is to take a pad that he just used and bring it outside to where you want him to go. Once he starts using it outside, take the used pad and rub the wet part on the grass. If you do this for a while, he will catch on, and Treats and praise every time he gets it right!!!! :):) |
