Is it bad to train your yorkie with weewee pads and outdoors? I have a new yorkie when I got her from the breeder she was partially house trained to go outside. I have started training her on wee wee pads as well. She is doing well with both. Is that too confusing for her? Or should it be fine to train her this way. |
If she will use both that is great! I have 3 that will only use wee wee pads and 2 who will only go outside. None of them will do both. |
Joey does both, I would take him outside first thing in the morning and last thing at night, but during the middle of the night, I would always use the pad. During the daytime we did both, but the pads are a real convenience for me. |
all three of my little one use both so its great if youre not home and its raining wee wee pad when they want outside best of both worlds Quote:

Mine use both. |
Cross training to both pads and outside is the best of both worlds. :D |
Bobby goes outside when I am home and he uses the pads when I am not home. Works perfectly. I first taught him to use the pad and then once he had that down he learned how to go outside. He is now at the point where he will sit by the door and look at me when he has to go. |
Porkie uses both and it's great for all of us :D |
I have a question along these same lines. We take Mufasa outside and we have pee pads inside. How do I "teach" him to use the pee pads inside. I guess I just assumed he knew what he was supposed to do. Is there something I should do or a command I should say when I want him to pee on the pad when he's inside? |

I found that occasionally I'd put Oscar on his pad and he'd just sit there looking up at me. I bought a spray housetraining aid, and it has worked wonders. (It's a liquid, that to the dog smells like urine. It doesn't smell like anything to humans). When he's sitting on the pad not going, I'll spray a little on the pad and repeat the potty command. Nine times out of ten he'll sniff the liquid and go on the pad. Good luck! |
Izzy is trained to do both. It really works great because I will take her out to potty most of the time but if I am gone for a while or its raining/snowing then, it works out for the BOTH of us! :) |
What is the name of the spray you use? Does your dog get being able to potty on the pad is o.k. but anywhere else is NOT o.k.? |
My girls do both:thumbup::thumbup: |

I've only had Oscar for couple weeks and the training is going slowly, but surely. When I catch him in the act of "going" off his pad, I'll clap my hands loudly and tell him "NO" firmly. (Only scold them if you catch them in the process of going ... ) He has started associating going on the pad with a treat and going off with scolding, and has started jumping into his box without me putting him there. (I'm using a shallow litter box lined with the puppy pad). I think what is key is not giving them the opportunity to have an accident. First thing in the morning, after eating, after playing, once every hour or so and right before bed put him on the pad and give him the opportunity to eliminate. Are you crate training as well? |

This is a good way, notice she says "when I catch him in the act" she scolds. Only scold if you catch them in the act, not after you find the mistake, by then they don't know why you are mad. I bought the puppy spray too, and have nearly a whole bottle left over. Most pads have an attractant built into the pad, but the spray works well, for washable pads. Once the puppy has peed somewhere, the odor will always be there to its nose, and it takes a special enzyme cleaner to remove those odors, normal cleaning solutions won't work. Also, there own urine is an attractant, and you can blot some up with a pad, and leave that on the pad. |

Now I know what I am for sure using my Petsmary giftcard on!! Pee Pee Pads and training spray!! |
I'm not necessarily "crate" training but I do have Nahla in my laundry room when I'm gone and at night because she isn't trained. Mufasa gets free reign of the house because he is much better with going outside. |
I dont think it will confuse him My Rocky uses a wee wee pad in the house and when we go outside he does his business outside too but it has to be on the grass ! ha ha h |
MIne does both...this way if I run late coming home I don't have to worry. |
I used a spray attractant to convert my Yorkie from paper pee pads to washable pads. I only had to use it 3x. I too have an entire bottle leftover. That stuff is VERY strong! Don't over spray as I did once or your entire house will smell. I might suggest that if you are going to stay with pee pads you start out using the washables. It will save you money in the long run and they are more earth friendly. They aren't as bad as washing baby diapers by any means. I bought mine on sale here Washable Puppy Training/Whelping Pads www.PersonallyPaws.com They have fancy prints and such but I just went for the straight white pads which are much easier to spot problems or oncoming heats I find. Whichever you decide, good luck! Btw, my Yorkies go outside and inside. Come winter, they will only go inside because they hate snow! |
We had to stick with just using the litterbox until Buddy was trained to always go back to it because he was having to many accidents. Once he got the hang of it and was house broke (at 5 months) he uses the litterbox and goes outside. We are trying the same method with Bella, but she is being a bit more stuborn about it. Here is to hoping she gets it soon!! |
Winston is trained indoor and outdoor. Where we live it can get very very cold so we figured if he knows where to go both in and out than he'll never feel like he has to go out in the freezing cold. The only thing is, is I don't know if he'll ever learn to ASK to go outside as he doesn't have to... he can just go to his pee-pad. So I don't the correct answer to this but it works with our lifestyle. |
Teddi is trained on both pads and outside....I think she prefers outside but it's nice to know if I am going to be gone for a long time or if we are traveling and I leave her in a hotel she will use the pads. I would say out of a week she probably pees about 3 times and poops once on the pad inside. |

Sometimes i feel like such a dimwit....i didnt even think about putting the puppy pad in a shallow litter box......that will solve my problems of him thinking its a toy and dragging it all over the house...THANK YOU!!! OH and i'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO going to buy that spray this weekend!! |
training This is what I'm doing with Lily too. She is good on the pee pad in her area (blocked off with gates) and she goes outside when I take her. Reality is though she has almost no free time but she'll still pee in the house...sigh...I'm a little frustrated. She is 4 1/2 months. Kimberly |
