Do you think bellybands help or hinder potty training?
 
Hi all,
My Yorkie is 1 year old. He's still not reliably trained in the house. I've figured out his poop schedule really well, so he doesn't ever poop in the house anymore, but I can't seem to get control of the peeing. He will do really well for awhile, and then suddenly I will catch him peeing in the house several times in one day. I got tired of cleaning up spots so I started using the belly bands in the house. I still supervise him and still take him out like crazy. It seems that we have a streak of days where the pads are clean, and then a streak of days where he goes on them several times a day. I hate having him have to wear the bellybands, but I also want him to be able to run around the room with me and my children without having to worry about my carpet being ruined! What do you think about using belly bands? Any advice? I just feel like a failure in the puppy potty training area :(

Conner absolutely hated the belly bands. When he was potty training, if he went peepee in the house, I would put the belly band on him until it was time to take him out again. Once he peepeed outside, I would take the belly band off, and tell him he was a good boy. It helped, but only because he hated the belly bands. He would sulk and go in his crate when he had it on. He was not fully potty trained until he was about 9 months old.

Sebastian doesn't mind the belly bands. Maybe I just need to start taking him out more often. I've been trying to stick to every hour, but maybe he needs to go out every 30 minutes instead for awhile.

I honestly don't know. I leave Alphy in one when I'm gone and at night because he potties. I thought it was because he was lifting his leg on things although I've never seen him do that. Last night I discovered he'll just pee in it. We were all cuddled up for the night and I could smell it. He never got up or anything, just layed there and peed in his band. :(

When I'm home I let him run around without a band, I've never caught him pottying. But there are stains around my house which I think come from when he's home with the kids and they don't take him out.

Okay, I got off track. For me, I don't think they are training Alphy at all, just protecting my stuff.

I only use belly bands to deter mating when the females are in heat. I don't think they would work well when trying to potty train. In my opinion it would hinder it.

my experience with bellybands weren't that great either. luckily, I got Cola during the summer so I had a lot of time to watch after him. From my experience, crate training works better than bellybands. I agree with JeanieK, I think the bellybands just hinder them.

I think that's what I've decided. I almost wonder if having it on encourages them to potty. I've also had the experience of not seeing him stop to pee or lift his leg or anything, but yet the pad will be soaked with pee :(. I've got a really good setup of baby gates finally so I'm able to keep a really close eye on him now (I'm a stay-at-home mom). And, when we aren't here he's in his crate. So maybe I will experiment with not using the bands for awhile. Thanks for all the thoughts!

If you Yorkie hasn't been neutered he's probably marking and not peeing. Marking comes from the same place, but dogs do it for a different reason than to empty the bladder, it has nothing to do with the urge to urinate, but rather they are "marking" their territory. The earlier a dog is fixed the more likely he will never mark inside. The usual housebreaking steps don't work for marking, and most breeders use a bellyband to control this. You need to take take the band off several time a day and take him outside to empty his bladder.

He was neutered when he was 8 months old. I have wondered if he was marking. He definitely doesn't pee like crazy in the house, just once in awhile. Maybe if I keep a really close eye on him he and keep him from doing it he will eventually stop?
