A training thread NOT about pottytraining! Haha, this one does not follow the trend in the training category! How the heck do you teach shake and rollover? Scooter has mastered sit, down, up (on his hind legs), speak, give kisses, come, and stay. I CANNOT convince him to lift his paw for shake, or to roll over. I've tried several things for shake - I cupped a treat in my hand and tried to get him to paw at it so that once he lifted his paw I'd say shake and he'd get it... but instead of pawing at my hand, he licked it. I've also tried just tickling the back of his paw to convince him to lift it, but usually I have to lift it, say shake, and give him the treat. Now he's getting the impression that if he just sits there and does nothing he gets a treat! We are having no progress with rollover either. Whenever I try to 'lure' him onto his back with the treat he jumps up to get it. I cannot get him to remain lying down! Any help with these two would be greatly appreciated! I love teaching him things, and he loves treats haha! The bulk of our playtime is learning, and we're both getting bored of the same ones all the time. |
shake This may sound silly but the truth is I don't think I'm doing any of the training with Lily (15 wks). Katie our 11 yr old standard poodle is modeling everything from potty training (oops I said it) to down and shake. I ask Katie, she does it and then I repeat with Lily. Lily watches her like a hawk and won't even eat out of her own dish now. I have to fool her and put her food in Katie's bowl first. Do you have a friend with a dog that shakes? Pair them up. I thought Lily was walking great until I tried without Katie. She sucked! It took another week to really get her to walk on her own although she does like to hang on to the leash. Good luck. I used to feel like I was the expert because Loki can learn anything... but I was trying to teach Sam today and I am so clueless! She just doesn't get it. I have a bookshelf full of training books so I will investigate and report back. I'm tempted to clicker train her because she does things all the time like roll over, kiss and backup, but I can't get her to learn the words or signals. |

I taught Bengi to shake by touching his paw and say shake it, and then he would lift it a little, so I would grab it and shake it. then reward. The rollover he learned after learning play dead, because they have to learn to lie down on their back in order to rollover. |

And... drum roll please... we conquored shake! It actaully was an accident, I put a little clip in his hair to keep it out of his eyes, so everytime he lifted his paw to itch it I'd grab his paw, say shake and give him a treat, and it worked! He doesn't do it consistantly, but after a little reminder he'll shake for me! Thanks for all the advice, we'll keep going at it! |
we are learning this in puppy classes right now... to shake a paw - get him/her to sit first than put a treat to their nose (but don't let go of the treat yet), tickle the bottom of the paw you want him/her to lift and AS SOON as they do give them the treat!! Once they've done this a few times introduce the word you want to use (this paw, shake paw, that paw, other paw)... just be consistant and DON'T GIVE A TREAT IF YOU HAD TO LIFT THE PAW. It really works, Winston was doing it last night! roll over we are still working on but basically you tell them to lay down (or what ever words you use for this) and than take the treat to their nose and lead their head with the treat so they have to roll over to get it.
