Chews Leash How do I get my yorkie to stop chewing the leash when I try to walk her? She is 10 weeks old & I know she is young but want to get her use to it. |
I had this problem with my golden retreiver when she was a pup..I went out and bought a harness, it had the loop that you hook the leash through on the back below the sholder blades, that way when she turned her head she couldnt reach the leash to chew it...it worked for us, mabye you can try that. |
Tried the harness & she manages to chew on that. Is she to young to try doing this. |
She isn't too young to start walking with a leash. Not sure how she is chewing on the leash if you are using a harness. It shouldn't be loose enough for her to chew. She will get where she doesn't pay any attention to it. |
I started leash training my pup at 11 weeks and he did the same thing. It took him about 2 weeks of consistent walking before he was comfortable with having the leash dangle on his collar without wanting to chew it. Also, are you using a regular leash or a retractable one? I was using a retractable leash and I kept it super short and held it right above his head so that there was no "give" on the leash for him to chew on. He's about 14 weeks now and he doesn't chew on it too much, only if he's feeling especially stubborn that day! |
leash issues Lily (15 wks) who I've had for about 10 days is TERRIBLE with the leash. She grabs it, chews it, growls with it in her mouth, rolls with it, pulls back and generally acts crazy for the first 15 minutes of the morning walk. I tried a harness and she hated it - it went back. Petsmart puppy class trainer told me to put white vinegar on it, but that didn't change a thing. Not sure but will keep reading this blog. Skipper occasionally chews his leash when we go for walks. He also constantly chews on his harness. I was thinking of spraying Bitter Apple on both his harness and leash. Skip is 11 weeks old, other dog owners keep telling me "he's just being a puppy". |
I use a harness but attach a short metal chain and then my flexiee leash. it worked for me as he does not like chewing on the chain. |
Sometimes they get the idea its a game because we may have laughed the first time they did it (because who can resist an adorable pup tugging and growling). My boy did it--actually did it in the show ring a few times. Usually a quick hiss would convey the message to knock it off but one time in particular he was bored and we were doing a down and back with the judge watching him like a hawk and at that moment he thought it would be fun to spice things up and latched onto the lead and started shaking/tugging while growling ferociously lol. Thankfully the crowd and the judge were amused (even commented that it was excellent "type" behavior) and put us up that day for BOW to my surprise. Just make sure you dont make it a game and you correct/distract her when she tries to do it. Chances are she will grow out of it! :) |
progress with Lily Lily is doing better with the leash chewing issue. Bitter apple and another spray didn't work but giving her a quick shtch noise and a quick tug stops her and then we walk at a quick pace forward. Not cured but much better. |
