Pee Pee Pad/Going outside Ever since I got Mufasa I was determined to train him to go outside to go potty. He does really well with that but of course he has accidents. I bought some pee pads and put them in my kitchen thinking maybe when he is inside and needs to go potty he'll use it. He did. To make a long story short....we just took Mufasa outside to go potty and he just looked around (something scared him) and ran back to the door without going potty. As soon as I bring him in he starts sniffing and I KNOW he has to potty so my son put down a pee pad and sure enough Mufasa went right on it. Yeah! What I'm wondering is do any of you use potty pads ONLY for your babies? I'm also thinking ahead to the winter time when I'm not really excited about standing in the freezing cold waiting on him to pee (it always takes him a while). So, do any of you just use pee pads and not take your babies outside? |
I use both. It is very nice when the weather is bad. |
I use them, but rarely. Whenever we're staying at a hotel, I put one in hotel room because he seems to use the bathroom more when we're away from home....Daemar LOVES rain and snow, and has no problem using the bathroom in it (I usually put him in his coat--plus, his hair is really thick), especially since I stay out there with him while he handles his um, business. IMO, You should work on him using it outside more, or else he's going to rely on using it on that pad. |
I am a new owner of a small yorkie as well and I am training for outside but have a pee pad in the kitchen as well . Always having larger dogs( and still have a shepherd )I am not crazy about it but his size alone and the bad weather up north in Canada kinda made the choice for this . He will head to the pad for a wiz ( and yes that is his name , Wiz ( Wizard of Paws ) but likes to run around like crazy before he has a bowel movement . Is this normal ? He is 3 months old . I try to bring out for if I catch him for the BM . |
How do you you use the pad outside ? We are trying to get him to go potty outside too. If we put the pee pad by the door, will that get him to let us know that he has to go? Will this train him to go to the door to go potty? |
I just put the pee pad near the patio door as well and bring him out as well . I prefer outside but like others have said if you have both , it does help for the bad weather but I cannot get him to poo on it ..because he runs around like a banshee and I have to catch him and we go outside for that . |
i started with pad only training. then he started to go outside also. we do both now. |
I sometimes wish Myah would use the potty pads...I have LOTS of them, but she prefers to go outside. So that is just what we do. We had to shovel a path for her last winter..she is only 7 months old now. Man it was cold sometimes. She doesn't really like the rain or the wet grass in the morning...but she goes quickly and comes right back in the house. We fenced in a area outside for her, so now I don't have to stand outside, if the weather is bad..I can stand inside.;) |
I know what you mean about standing outside in the rain and the cold but I have to ask are these little dogs always prey for birds cats ,etc if we do not watch them all the time ? I too have a fenced in yard but I feel I have to go out and watch over him steady . |
We don't have any birds of prey by us and no other animals that would be able to get to her. The only time I'm not out with her is when the weather is nasty out and usually anything that would get to her wouldn't be out in that weather. I always watch her regardless of the weather and I'm only about a foot away from her because when the weather is nasty...go goes only as far as she has to and is only outside for about 30 seconds. I would never leave her anywhere she wasn't safe. Now when we are up at our Cabin in Canada...that is a different story!!! I am with her and she is leashed when she is outside. |
My feeling is that they will always have to be watched for whatever ..well maybe I can train my German shepherd to yorkie babysit for me . Hah . |
Ever think of putting up a portable fence to use for those quick outside trips to potty. I did that with my guys, when they were small, even thought we have a huge fenced yard. And it worked. They were kept close and I could stand in the doorway and still be close enough to grab them, if there was a problem. |
Now that is a great idea ! I did see some small fencing on Pet Edge.com .. might check into that . You think as adults they will need that as well if he is one of the teeny guys ?Plus I imagine the fencing has to be a certain requirement ? |
