Doggie Diapers? I'm having a senior moment here. I can't recall the name of the doggy diapers! Anyway, my question is: Are they useful training aids or simply used for convenience sake? I would LOVE to spend some time outside of Daisy's X-pen and my office, which is where I am keeping her while she is being housebroken. If the diapers will help train her NOT to pee while wearing them, then that's great. If they simply catch her pee, then not so good. Anyone use them? If so, I'd love to hear your experiences. |
I am 95% sure that they are for convenience NOT for training. |
I've only used them when my girls go into heat. But I suggested for people that have potty training problem that can no longer handle the situation and they want something to stop the dog from peeing on the carpet ASAP vs. getting rid of dog. It will not help train a dog to stop peeing where she is not suppose to. |
THanks for your replies. I've been tempted to use them, just so that I can get Daisy away from her confinement area for awhile. But I do not want to do anything to inhibit her potty training. |
I would bet that if you put a diaper on your dog then you will find a very unhappy dog. |
I use them as well as bellybands and most will not go in them unless it is an emergency. They will try to hold it until they can go out. Every dog is different and you cannot just put them on and then forget about training, but if you still take them off of them every couple of hours and take them out then it works really well. When I go to a stange place my dogs always wear them becasue even the most well behaved and housebroken dog will have accidents or get excited about a new place and forget their manners. I do not want the embarassment of my dog soiling someone else's carpet but yet I want to be able to take my dogs lots of places with me so this alternative works. Works really wel in hotels and stores too. No chance of an accident makes me less stressful and we all have more fun. and no...just like everything else, it is what you are used to and they are not unhappy wearing the diapers or the bellyband. My standard poodle loves it because he thinks he's wearing clothes and it makes him more human.lol. |
I am saying that if they are not raised wearing them then they will indeed be unhappy. If they are raised with them, it would be different. I had to put them on Muffin a couple of years ago for just a short time. She had a UTI and became incontinent after using the antibiotics which it turned out upset her stomach, so she was a sick little dog for awhile. She walked around all hunched up and looked absolutely miserable. I felt just as bad as she did. Thank goodness it was a short-lived episode and she got over it. It killed me to see her look so pitiful. :( |
I remember on some show there (it was some wedding planner show or something like that) anyhow she would put little swimmers on her pup and just cut a little whole for its tail. (I guess the pup would get excited when new people would come on over) Anyhow I thought it was a good idea but II coould just imagine Gidgets hair getting all full of yuck.....I rather pick up a mess on the tile then deal with that..... |
Pleased to see someone raised this subject as I am dealing with one old girl who has gone senile and is peeing everywhere and my new puppy arrives in a week. At a dog show on the weekend I purchased two pairs of diapers, one for the old gal and one for the new pup. Well the old girl was having none of that. I do intend however to start the pup in them from day one while she is being trained. I don't think my carpets can withstand anymore dog piddle. I'm hoping that she will get used to them if she starts off on day one with them. I've used them before when my female was in heat and surprisingly she did not mess in them at all. So fingers crossed that they will be a useful aid in house training. |

In my experience and my friends experience, diapers do help a little with training because no dog wants to pee on itself so while wearing a diaper they are less likey to go potty and learn to hold it. This also gives you a little control for when they go. Becasue as soon as we would take the diaper off we would take our dog outside and say "potty outside" and give them a treat for going. This has helped them to learn that. But the main purpose of diapers(in my opinion) is for when a dog goes into heat and to keep a dog from pottying in a house when you can not keep an eye on them. I sell diapers and I have several customers that have dogs with seizures and they like to use diapers. I used to keep diapers on chloe only at night because she slept with us and I didnt want her to pee in the bed and she was very good about not pottying all night long so now she no longer wears them. And she would also wear a diaper when she went to my mom's house when she wasnt potty trained so then I didnt have to worry about my mom flipping out about an accident. :) |

I use them on my 2 for the same reason as SoCalyorkiLvr. and I have had to bring the diaper out today because Ahia came into heat again today. :mad: Buckeye is wearing his belly band again too. As long as it is not too tight on them they don\'t mind. If i happen to get it too tight it drives them nuts. I think diapers are great for potty training too. Ahia didn\'t like having a wet diaper on. I took her out so many times she rarely had a wet one. But it did save on clean ups. |
so are BELLY BANDS for boy dogs and DIAPERS only for girls? |
