training an unsocialized puppy I have a question..we have Riley for 11 days..he was not socialized at all the breeder was terrible,,and he was sooooo afraid of humans, well he will come to me now..but is still a little skittish with the other family members..he has made great progress in a short time..but when should i start training him...he is starting to chew EVERYTHING. and I dont want to scare him by saying No in the wrong tone..but I have to start training him on what behavior is acceptable and what is not..should i wait longer to build his trust first..or should i start to disaplin now?..any advice would be great thanks. |
Maybe try distracting him with a toy when he is chewing something he shouldn't and say a gentle no until he is more relaxed. |
thanks patti..I went and got a lot of thing for him to chew..that part is getting better..now i want to start teaching him to walk on a leash...i.tried and as soon as i put it on him...he freaked out.so Im gonna work on that now any suggestions? |

SUCCESS!!!!!...I let him drag the leash around the yard for a little while and i had my daughter sit a little piece away with a piece of cheese and he walked over for it while i held the leash..after that we walked down the street and back..he held his little head up and pranced all the way..he seemed to love going for a walk..im soooo glad,,because he was sooooo fearfull of everything when we got him and he walked down the street which was compleatly new to him as he has never been out of the yard..and he was not scared a bit he had a blast..we even stoped to see the lady at the post office and he was not the least bit nervous there either..:happyboun |

as for the strangers and family. Treas work wonders. have them sit at his level and when he comes to them they give him a treat. (don't make him just let him do it) I hope this helps. and redirect the bad behavior with something good. |
That's great!!! He sounds like he is doing great. My Pixie was 13 months when I got her and not socialized and she hates being out of the house and won't walk on a leash so your baby is doing great!! |
