Not a yorkie topic, but I need help I have a friend that has two reg min dashchunds. Male is 11 months, and female is just over two years old. Both are registered and have papers. Because of the economy, my friend is giving them away, and wanted me to take one or both. But there are some issues I'm not sure of. The girl may be recently pregnant by the male, she looks it to me, and neither have been housetrained, both have always been backyard dogs. Do you think I could housetrain a two year old female? I'm tempted to take her because she is so sweet and I'm worried about the fate of the puppies. Both dogs are in good physical shape, but I'm worried about the housetraining part. BTW, I've owned and trained puppies and dogs before. Please give me your thoughts and opinions asap Thanks |
Well, I'll start off saying that I have 2 Yorkies....Max was my first dog ever and Madison was 2 yrs old when he was found recently. I'm obviously no authority on this subject. But I DID train both of them (both males; Madison was not neutered until recently and marked EVERYWHERE when I first brought him home). I'm here most of the day so it's a little easier for me to keep opening the door and saying "wanna go potty outside?"....and if they need to go, they do...if not, they don't. Maybe it's more like they have ME trained;). All I really know in my heart, is that housetraining would def. be a concern b/c regardless of how much you love an animal, you don't want your furniture or carpets trashed; but if I really cared about the dog (s), I'd figure out a way to make it work. It's usually up to you as to how successful it will be unless there's some physical or deep-seated psychological issue. I think almost all dogs live to please their owner and I truly believe that they know when they are loved and being saved from a worse fate; so they'll try to make you proud of them; you just need to be very consistent and PRESENT (at least when you're home) and let them know what is right and what is not. Good luck to you; it sounds like you are a very responsible and compassionate owner:) |

I've heard that dogs can be housetrained at any age, and the key, just as with puppies is consistancy! So if you have enough time and determination to always watch them and be consistant, then I'd say go for it! |
I have had two dachshunds. They are very intelligent dogs, but they were bred to think on their own. I would say they are about like yorkies to housetrain. I had mine from puppies and they trained well, but I have no experience with training adults. Good luck whatever you decide. Dachshunds are sweet little snugglers. |
I think it won't be a problem as long as you take them out often they will get the hang of it quick. |
Thanks to everyone who responded. I decided not to take the dogs. All they have ever know is the freedom of a backyard, and I just thought it too cruel. Thanks again, and kiss your yorkies for me. |
