Training a lab puppy and yorkie puppy together? My husband and I are getting a lab puppy in a couple of weeks and I would also really love a yorkie puppy. I was wondering if it would be better to get the lab puppy first and try to train him before getting a yorkie, or if it would be a good idea to get them at the same time and train them together. |
I guess it's your personal choice. Housebreaking can be time consuming and might take a while depending on the puppy. If you get them at the same time it might be easier then doing it twice. I think the lab will be easier to train. Both my yorkies have accidents in the house still and they are adults. I think they would enjoy growing up together. If I was going to get two puppies I would get them at the same time. Good luck and congratulations on the new additions! |
1 Attachment(s) We have a 14 month old Lab and our Yorkie is almost 9 months. We got our Lab (Miley) first and she was potty trained in days! Miley is so smart and picks things up very fast. I REALLY wanted a Yorkie and after having a very easy beginning with Miley I went for it. We just love Paisley our Yorkie! Potty training was so much more difficult. She rarely had accidents in the house, but I was constantly on her. I don't think I could have done them both at the same time and had the same amount of success. I will tell you that when Paisley came things got very hard. I could/can not leave them alone together. They are always supervised. Miley is very playful! She can be too rough with Paisley and I need to intervene. Miley doesn't mean to hurt Paisley but simply because of her size I need to be cautious. I hope they will be great friends and can see that happening already. I try to "train" them separately, but notice Paisley watching Miley. I think she picks up faster as a result of seeing Miley do the commands. Good luck! I hope this helps some. Paisley 5.3 pounds Miley 62 pounds! |
You can house train them together, but you will need to basic obedience train them separately, unless you work with one and your hubby works with the other. Once they are reliable on commands separately, you can up the ante and work with them both together! You can visit LDT Home and look under resources for some house training and other training info. If you are looking to basic obedience train affordably, I am now offering my course online, with unlimited email and phone support. Good luck whatever you decide to do! My post has more to do with the size difference than with the age of the pups. When Ginger was about 10 months old, one of our neighbors got a golden puppy. They played together all the time. Gingers a pretty big yorkie and when they started to play, she was the heavier of the two. What we noticed as the golden grew was that she adjusted her play to meet Ginger's needs. I never worried about the two of them playing together. Ginger taught her to be gentle with her when she small enough for Ginger (the older dog) to have some control...I'm not sure if the experts would agree, but perhaps getting the yorkie first and letting it grow up a bit might be a good idea. Just a thought... |
