Grooming Stress >.< Choco hates being brushed with the thin metal pin brushes, he hates being in baths, he hate being cleaned around the nose area, and he hate being trimmed hair..... I cannot do anything with this dog without it hating it and running away.... I've tried giving him treats while doing it, and it did not work... I tried giving him a chew toy to distract him while I do the work, and it doesn't work either.... Any tips?? Thanks!! |
eye contact..let the dog decide Quote:
wash his face daily with a wet cloth and dry him.. this will prepare him for weekly baths.. get earth bath shampoo at petsmart.. dont give up.... 5 minutes sessions are best 3 times a day for training.. :) |
Roxie was not liking her groomind every night but I started out slow just brushing part of her and gradually worked up to a full groom. I also, when she is tired lat her in my legs on her back and gently brush her out. She loves that and I can get her brushed several times a day so the night grooming isn't as long. I groom all 3 Yorkies everynight at 9 and when they are all done they get treats so they look forward to it now. |
thanks guys for your advice, i have not given up yet... i am trying everyday.. i hope he gets used to it soon... i changed the brush, to a non metal brush and of course without any ball points.. he does not run away as much, but he still does not like it.. and as for washing his face... i guess this sounds good. but these are great tips! thanks a lot :D |
Duke is the same way, he would actually want to chew the brush or towel as I approach him with them. He is almost 9 months now and it's always a difficult time for him and I to groom him. |

I know the feeling I know the feeling, our little Oso hates grooming time, but we get through it in about 30 minutes. My hubby holds him around the shoulder area and rubs his side, and we both tell him what a good boy he is. He will nip here and there for the most part just sits there. Of course he gets a treat when we are done. I hope this helps you. |

So what's the solution...I take him about every 6 weeks to a great groomer.. and then threaten him about once a month that I'm going to do it myself and he is so thankful for his groomer...ps..i never stay...don't want to hear any crys or whining... and my groomer swears there is none of that..and I Almost believe him''' ciao |
well choco is ok with bathing now, except i have to be in the shower area with him, he doesn't like it when he is in the tub and im cleaning him from outside.... i gave him a hair cut recently.. its still not fully complete.. i do it little at a time so i won't have to force Choco too much.... otherwise he'll probably start hating it completely. but so far he is slowly getting use to the whole grooming process.... well at least that's what i am seeing.... hopefully he will start enjoying it soon >< thanks for the advice!! :D |
My little girl would always run away or try to play with the brush. I now put her up on a counter and do the brushing and now she doesn't fight it at all. Plus she gets treats to help relax her during the "knotty" times. |
Hot Rod has starting to actually sit still for me to wash his little face now. He licks the towel. He still doesn't like for me to comb his mustache but will allow me to use my hands to smooth his hair out. |

I tried putting Jack on the counter and it worked much better than him just on the floor when I was trimming his fur. It worked even better when my husband came and stood by..... kinda gave the feeling "alright we mean business" and giving him treats. But I found out that I am not good at trimming fur at all. I sure hope I can get someone to help me fix it so he doesn't have to walk around looking dumb. If I were him, I would have fired me. Hope things go better for you. Have you tried different color washcloths? I know it sounds dumb but he might have a color preference. |
When Leo is giving me a hard time about being brushed my DD (8) will come over and massage his ears while I brush. Works everytime!:) |
