Yorkie topknots I have a pretty good deal of experience with Yorkies, but I'm at a loss on this one. I simply cannot get my girls to accept a topknot. I don't tie it so tight that it's uncomfortable, I part it correctly, I do all the things that seem to be right, and they still go crazy. If I put anything at all on their heads, even something loose, they immediately start grinding their heads their heads into the carpet to pull it out, to the point that it starts tearing their hair out. I resorted about a year ago to just trimming them some little bangs, but I'd really like some advice about how some people get them to accept the topknot so I can put a bow on their head without making them miserable. If my dogs are miserable, so am I ;) Many thanks for any advice. |
me too Well you know i am going to be watching the replys to this - I have years with Yorkies but most of my girls refuse to wear a bow - whats up with that ? any way i am going to be watching for all the advice i can find here :D |
I wish I could be more help, but I started Layla off very young with it. As long as her hair was long enough to put a little clip in, she had something in her hair every day. She hated it at first and tried to get it out, but eventually she got used to it and now prefers being able to see :) Maybe you could start out with just using plastic barrettes or something and then distracting them with toys or treats, and be consistent with that every day? You could start off just putting them in for a 5 minutes, then 10 or 15, and eventually get them used to wearing them all day |
When I first got my puppy I put it in while he was sleeping, when he woke up he didn't even notice it was in there. Now if i don't put it up in the morning he rubs his face and whines till I put it up, or clip it back with a hair clip. |
Sammy deals with hers when she is occupied (like if we go out) but at home she insists on ripping it out. I think it was a game with her because every time she ripped it out I would put it back in... but now I just ignore her. Her topknot used to be so beautiful but now a big chunk is gone because she does the same thing, she practically spins on her head to get it out. Since I don't want any more hair to break I've been loosely putting in soft bands, but those are easier for her to get out. I don't know how she ripped hair out because i try to use the covered bands. She rolls around so violently I think the broken hair might actually be from a knot/mat she got when her hair was down. |
Thanks so much for all the responses! Seems that a lot of people either are in or have been in the same boat I am. I've tried the plastic barrettes like you use for babies. No go. Those are out in thirty seconds. I never use regular rubber bands, I use the coated ones like I use for my pony tails, because they don't pull on the hair. No go. The doing it while they're asleep would be good if I could do anything while they're asleep, but they never are. If they're curled up in their beds seeming to be asleep, and I'm on the phone, and I say the words puppies, dogs, girls, outside, or a myriad of other things, they're immediately awake and alert. No chance I could sneak anything in while they're sleeping. They seem to always be using one ear to listen to what I'm doing and saying even if they appear to be sleeping  |
Top Knot I use the rubber bands they sell on ebay for toy dogs. They are very small and do not pull Katie's hair much (she's the one in my avatar), but do stay in even if she starts rubbing her head on the pillows and such. She's not much for bows, but sometimes for pic sake, I put a bow over the rubber band without a problem. Debbie Tasha, Tea' and Katie |
This site has some tips on how to put in a topknot as well as training your dog to wear the bow. It worked for Joey. I agree with the others who suggest that the band you use is really important. Casual Way to Put Dog Bows In |
