Training a year old Rehome....
 

I need suggestions on how to potty train a baby who's already 1 years old...she's a rehome I recently got. I've always gotten mine as babies and have been able to pp pad train them as well as go outside. Now 2 out of my 3 will only potty outside (the 3rd is still a pup and is almost there..she uses both pp pads and outside but mostly outside).

Do I use the same method as the others or take a different approach since she's already a year? I'm just not sure how to break her habit..she's squatting anywhere to pp or poo. I've been trying to take say no, then take her to the pad when she does and say potty at the same time so I'm hoping in due time, that'll work but just wanted any other suggestions from anyone who has possibly gotten an adult(or rescue) and had to start from there.

BTW - She's maybe barely 3lbs so I'm assuming she can't hold it as long...sometimes, she squats and nothing comes out at all...when she does, it's only about the size of a half dollar.:) They also said they would put diapers on her at night. My girls just hold it thru the night after I've taken them out for their bedtime pp(around 10:30-11PM)..even the 8 mth old.

Any suggestions? Should I just pretend I'm getting a brand new puppy and treat the training method as such?

[B]Yeah, I think maybe you should go the route as if she is a puppy and start from scratch. You don't know what she was/wasn't allowed to do before hand.
We just rescued Chance two weeks ago and he had been in a kennel that he and all the other dogs were peeing and pooping in so of course when he came into the house the first thing he tried to do was lift his leg and pee on my sofa.:eek:
I yelled, he looked at me and has not done it again. I did go and get him a belly band that he does wear when ever he is not in sight but he has not tried to lift his leg inside at all since that day.
I take him out about every 45min. to one hour when I am home and wait outside w/him until he goes.
So far so good. In due time I bet she will get the hang of it and be just like the rest of your gang.

I got Pixie at 13 months and she was use to being in an inside run at the breeders and not trained at all. It was hard at first since she was so old and I have 3 others I thought I coudle let her loose like the others and just watch her bu that didn't work. So I went back to watching her and when I couldn't she was crated. She never really got good at the peepads but decided she would rather go outside like my Pom. It took awhile! I have 2 that go outside only and 2 that use pads only. I cannot get them to go both places. You may also want to have a urinalysis run to make sure she doesn't have a urinary tract infection.

You would train this dog like you would a puppy.

1. Feed on a schedule.
2 Take out on a schedule.
3. Say "go potty" as soon as the dog STARTS to go, not before and not after. This will train your dog to go on command.

Oh no! Not the sofa! I did a quick yelp when I tried to catch her one time and scared the poor thing half to death...

Thank you ladies....great tips & advice. I will also be taking her to my vet this week. Now she has a little diahrea which I'm sure is coming from the transition also..hopefully that will fade soon. I'm going to give her boiled chix & rice for dinner tonight... thanks again!

One more thing...I really, really would rather not do the diaper thing as they have been....what do you think? Is it okay to stop now or should I do it gradually?
