How many hours can your yorkie hold it? I've been crate training my 18 week old yorkie for about a month now, and I know the general rule of thumb is 4 months, 4 hrs, 5 months 5 hrs, etc, and I do not plan on crating him for loooong hours everyday, it's usually no more than 5 hrs max, but once in a while I have to work late...are any of your babies able to hold it for 8 hrs without peeing in their crate? How long can your pup hold it and how old is your pup? At what age should I expect him to be able to hold it without having an accident in his crate? I tried ex-pen'ing him today with a wee pad, but he peed outside of the pad, next to his water dish instead. I set it up so his food/water and crate was at one end, and his pee pad the opposite end, but he didn't pee on the wee wee pad! I was gone for 5 hrs today. I was told today by someone else who has a 6 month old bulldog puppy that can hold it for 10 hrs! But she is 30 lbs, not 4.3 lbs like my Darwin... |
I think that rule is for big dogs... Mine can go about 4-5 max during the day and 8 hours through the night. |
Kash is just over 6 months old (he'll be 7 months old on July 8), and usually it just depends on how he's feeling that day. lol. he's in his ex-pen all day while i'm at work (8-10 hrs). he has a pee pad, toys, crate, food/water. sometimes i'll come home and there will be no pee on his pad, and he'll just go potty outside for a really long time! :D other times, there will be pee on the pad, but it's usually fresh, so i know i just missed him doing it. he holds it all night while we sleep. |
I didn't know about any rule of thumb when I crate trained Buddy four yrs. ago. He was able to hold it by 5 1/2 mos. for 8 1/2 hrs. I walked him twice in the am 6 & 8 before leaving for work. Today he has gone to 9 hrs with no problem when we sleep late at times on the weekend. Then when we go right out when getting up he's even fussy where he want's to pee taking his time until he finds the right spot. He is a larger Yorkie at 16lbs but when he was 5 1/2 mos he weighed only 7lbs. He's got a great bladder. Of course I never let him hold it when I'm home. We're out walking every 4 or 5 hrs because I love to walk. He has never gone potty in the house after he was trained. |
I don't think size has anything to do with how long they can hold it. Teddi is only 3 lbs and she can hold it all day while I am at work and all night. She is 1 1/2 years old. My friend has a cockapoo who is the same age but a lot bigger and her dog can't hold it all day. Both of us leave pee pads out for the dogs but her dog uses hers and mine doesn't. The other thing could be that I have a standard poodle who holds it all day and I feel like my yorkie just copies what she does. |
My pup is 4 months old and goes 10 hours at night without needing to pee. During the day she goes about 4 or 5 hours without an accident in her crate. And she is around 3 pounds. |
I think it depends on the dog, Lily is 1 and still goes once at night and Kingston is almost 12 weeks and does not always go in the night. |
Except for the very first night we brought Bailey home - she's been holding it all night. To clarify "all night" - we get up at 5:30 a.m. We kept her in a crate at night for about two months and now she sleeps in a ottoman next to my bed. During the day - we keep her in an ex-pen (crate is too small) with a pee pad in a liter box, and water (she never drinks water during the day - but its always there). When she was younger, she missed the pee pad - so I just cleaned up the pen every day -no big deal. At around 8 mos of age, she started holding it all day which is about 8 hours for us. |
Overnight, Holly can hold it up to 10 hours. She has a bladder of steel, or one heck of a pain tolerance! |
I think its different for each of them,, just like it is for us! mine all sleep all night in their bedrooms (crates),, Ayla has ever since i brought her home,, but they've all been different:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
mine is 16 weeks and sleeps in her crate from 11pm/12am to 730 am without an accident she has a pee pad during the day in her ex pen which she hasnt missed in 3 weeks |
My Katie is 13 months she lasts from 7.30pm night to 7.30am. morning. She's being doing this since she was 9 months. During the day about 4/5 hours. Good luck love. Hugs Shirl x x :animal36 |
My little Zoe doesn't really understand pee pads either. I tried really hard to train her when we first adopted her (when she was 8yrs old, from my mother in law). She would bark, I'd ask her if she had to go "pee" (my mother in law picked that phrase, not me), she'd bark yes, I'd put her on the pad and say pee like 1000x, but she just thought I was being mean! I'm curious though, what is an ex-pen? |
An ex-pen = exercise pen, usually 2-3 feet tall, and can be used outside or inside for the pup to have a bit more room and be contained. |
Max can go 10 hours. I haven't tried him longer. We usually wake him up to go potty. Mainly because we have medicine to take, and have to get up anyway. |
