Where do you buy a bell to hang on the door? Many of you have mentioned hanging a bell on the door for the pups to use to communicate needing to go outside...where can I buy such bell? My baby is not very vocal, he's gone and sat by the door a couple of times, but doesn't make a peep!! I need a bell!! |
Pepe_mint (Mandee) at Paw Passions sells them. I have them and love mine! They are called business bells. |
If you want to save a ton of money, they are very easy to make. Simply go to a craft store and buy some leather lacing and extra large jingle bells. Tie a bell to the lacing every 6-12 inches or so. Make sure you put one at the very bottom. Make a loop of lacing at the top to hang on the door. You should be able to do this for $5. I have seen them retail for 4-5 times that. I have seen them called Poochie bells. |
Isabel sells them too! She calls hers Tinkle Bells! :D The Bows and Tails Boutique |
Love the idea! How do you train your baby to use the bell? |
2 Attachment(s) Hello!! Please let me know if I can do something for your baby!! this are some examples of my tinkle bells, but I have tons of fabrics to pick, and are 12.99 plus 2.50 shipping. Thanks a bunch! |
But how do I train him to use the bell?? I was trying to think what door can I use, but they all are been open and closed during the day, with that little noise going on all day, wouldn't he get confused and start peeing all over? |

" It may take a little effort to train your pets to use the Poochie Bells, but, the rewards will last a long time. Introduce your pet to the Poochie Bells using consistent voice commands and visual reinforcement by ringing the bells in front of them and repeating the same command you wish to associate with them going outside to potty. When they start ringing the bells themselves be sure to provide plenty of praise. Dogs love to please, so it doesn't take much to accomplish this learned behavior. Please avoid giving treats or food with the act of ringing the bells as this will reward a behavior for food instead of going outside "for business". |
It really helps to put some peanut butter or velveeta cheese on the bottom bell. |
Thanks everyone for your input! I decided to be crafty and made a potty bell myself tonight. It's not as pretty as the professional ones, but it'll do. Can you guys share your voice command that you use to teach ringing the bell? I was thinking "go outside, go potty" since I already trained him to understand "go potty"?? Or is this confusing b/c it's using the same command I use when I ask him to go potty on the grass? Also - with giving treats, do I give the treats after he rings the bell himself, after we go outside? or after we get back in from pottying? Oh - and is it confusing to the pups when we are opening and shutting the door and the bells are going off without them pawing at it? Thanks for your thoughts in advance! |
OOoh - I see, so don't use food as treats when teaching them to ring the bell. Just verbal praises...I can do that. Also - I think I'm going to use "potty time!" since that sounds a bit different than "go potty" which is what I say to get him to do his business. |
We taught Bailey to use a service/desk bell. ($5 at office depot) It sits right next to the door - so it doesn't ring when we use the door for other than potty training. Our friends just think its hillarious! When training - we just scoop her up, grab her paw and tapped the bell - and said "outside". It was so successful - that we put another bell in the bedroom. The down side was that when she was younger - she'd hit the bell to go outside and play....and our bedroom was upstairs (ugh). Annoyed, after a couple weeks, I picked up the bell in the bedroom. Next, she discovered the springy door stop - and now paws at that when she needs to potty. At least she doesn't paw at it to play. These dogs are sooo smart!!!! Good luck! |

It took us 2 months to potty train - and I introduced the bell after the 1st month. We also take the bell with us when we visit relatives - and she uses it where ever we go! |
So cute - that is exactly the stage Darwin is at now. We've been crate training for exactly 1 month, and this 2nd month I'm going to start with the bell, and also ex-pening him when I have to leave for longer than 4 hrs. Will this undo all the crate training I've done? Now will he get confused b/c there will be a wee wee pad in the expen for him to go on? |
I introduced Tessa to the bell when I first got her at 10wks old. I made her hit it with her paw everytime I put her outside and after about a month, she started doing it on her own. Tessa has since "taught" Harley to use it, and now my cat will also use it. FYI my cat is 6yrs old and saw that the dogs got to go out when they ran it so she started to use it too!:D |
Unfortunately, we work too - so Bailey is in an ex-pen 8 hrs a day - 4 days a week. I never tried to train her in it. I just laid down pee pads in a litter box and cleaned it up every day. Sometimes she went on the pee pad, sometimes she'd go outside the box and often she chewed up the pee pad. At about 8 months she outgrew all those bad habits. Now, she either holds it - or goes on the pee pad - and she doesn't chew it up at all. I was always told that dogs will not mess where they live - and it was true - they just have to grow into it. |
I used a cat toy and ran a piece of ribbon through it. |
Scared of bell! Ok - so I bought a service bell from office depot, and I've been scooping up Darwin and making him hit the bell and then saying "outside" each time we go out to potty, but he's super scared of the bell!!! As soon as I pick him up and get his paw out he struggles in my arms to get free and does anything he can to move away from the bell...did this happen to anyone else's yorkie?? Should I keep it up in hopes that he will overcome this fear of the bell and eventually learn to ding it by himself? |
Yes, Bailey did the same thing when potty training. It took a few weeks for her to understand it. Today, she'll just lightly paw at it - if she's just bored and wants to go out and play. But when she's serious about pottying - she will hit it dead on several times and then come stare until we get up to let her out. Keep it up and good luck!! :) |

We use a bell too. I have one hanging next to my door, so that it doesn't ring everytime we go out. I would just ring the bell and say "outside" After a few weeks, she started ringing it herself...and I made a big deal out of it. She does ring it whenever she wants to go out... |
Go to the bird section in a pet store I got a nice brass bell on a chain. My baby rings it whenever he wants to go out. As it is summertime he rings it alot. It is funny that the bell was supposed to be for bathroom breaks only but it works for that too. |
Training Breakthrough! Darwin rang the service bell for the first time today all by himself! I was sitting on the couch reading a book, and I hear "ding, ding" and I'm thinking to myself, why the heck are people riding their bikes out in the woods? Then I realized, omg, it's the pup!! He rang it twice pretty dead on, and then waited patiently by the door while I fretted about putting his harness on and taking him out. He smelled left and right for about 10 mins though before going potty, but at least he went! But then when he wanted out a couple hrs later to poop, he didn't bother with the bell...he kinda just scratched at the door. I waited with him by the door to see if he'd ring the bell, but no such luck, so I rang it for him with his paw. Did this happen with your pups? Does it take a while for them to get consistent with the bell? I'm still really excited that he rang all by himself even if it was an accident! |
I love the idea but I think Mufasa would just think it was a toy and want to play with the bells all the time. How do you discourage him from playing with the bells but then encourage him to ring the bell to go potty? |
Well I usually remove the bell if my Diddy is in one of his moods to keep ringing especially if had been out already. |

Yep, I continued to ring the bell with Bailey's paw too - just as you are. He's on the right track! Congratulations on your success!!!! |
