Yorkie training in the bay area Bailey is almost ready to start obedience training. i wanted to find a class dedicated to yorkies. does anyone know of such a thing in the bay area? i know there are all kinds of pug training. i'm just not sure about going to petco to train with a bunch of bigger dogs. |
There are places dedicated training only for pugs in CA? |
I am in the San Jose area too!! I just sent you a PM ;) that would be great if there is a yorkie trainer in our area, I would love to send my 2 to yorkie class :D |
I just spoke to missy's mom and i thought of an idea? if there are no obedience classes dedicated to yorkies in the bay area, lets plan one of our own! we could hire a trainer dedicated to yorkies and split the cost. if anyone is intersted i will do some research on trainers around here and keep you posted on what i find. yes i have heard of pug training classes. i think they are mostly in san francisco so why not yorkie training?! |
If you are going to do it, find someone that has work with small dog and know how to train them. There is some difference in training small vs. large dog. That's one of the problem I'm having. My trainer trains large dogs and all of the obedience trainer I know train large dog. Their method of training to get a good heeling pattern will not work for my yorkies. |
thats exactly why i am skeptical of going to petco. i want someone that specializes in small dogs and all the better if they specialize in yorkies. i have been doing some research this morning (its monday, who wants to do actual work!) so far i havent found anything :( but i will keep looking. i was thinking about posting an ad on craigslist looking for yorkie trainers |
Definitely a good idea to find a trainer who knows about small dogs/yorkies. I did Brody's training at Petsmart, and while the teacher was good, she strongly suggested Brody wear a collar instead of a harness for training purposes. I don't use collars because of the trachea issue. So one day during class, I broke down and let her try the collar, and she was yanking on him! I was like "HELLO! Do you know anything about Yorkie's tracheas?" It was horrible. I didn't bring my collar to class anymore. Brody was quite stubborn when walking on a leash in class, and she would always say, "You should the collar." Sorry, but I am more concerned about my puppy's health rather than if he can walk on a leash or not. AND when he is on a leash outside, in the wide open, he is perfectly fine. I think it was just the environment at Petsmart - so much to smell and see. Find a trainer who is sensitive to the health concerns of a Yorkie. |
I teach agility and do I suggest all the dogs wears a collar even the small dogs. In obedience it is really hard to get a good healing pattern using a harness. Plus can't compete with a harness on either. I do tug on the collar to move my dogs and I think it is okay to do it. But I have gotten on people who have yank or drag their dog too hard. I don't see the need for that. |
Yeah, she was dragging my poor baby across the floor and holding his body up with the collar (because he was trying to lay down). In addition, we weren't learning how to heal, we were just learning how to walk on a leash. I'm personally not that concerned about walking perfectly on a leash so that's why I wouldn't use the collar. I would rather let him stop a sniff stuff than yank him around. In return, I don't get a perfectly behaved dog, but I figure you have to give a little and take a little. When we go on short walks around my property, I just put a collar on Brody because the harness takes so much time. But, I don't pull on him - I just let him go at his own pace. Probably bad for training, but I just don't want to hurt my puppy. I do wish I could train Brody to do agility and cool stuff like that because it looks like so much fun, but I am not a good dog trainer and I know it! |
Poor baby! I would hate to see one of mine being dragged across the room. :( When I started out in obedience with one of my dog the instructor suggested the same thing(dragging my dog across the room). I said "NO" and that was the end of the conversation. I'm sure you are a good trainer and probably can teach Brody to do agility. It's definitely fun. |
Otis went to Sirius Puppy training. They have classes throughout the Bay Area. Of course, this was about six years ago, but I have nothing but good things to say. You can request a class with smaller breeds so your puppy won't feel too intimidated by the bigger breeds. http://www.siriuspup.com/ |
Duncan is going to Petsmart for puppy training and the collar didn't work for him. The trainer has no problem with the harness. He will be starting agility classes this Weds. to see if he is capable. I really not too sure what all it involves, but he loves being around other dogs and people and I love training him. I never thought of yorkies being into agility until a friend of mine told me about it. I think it would be a good experience for both of us. |
